Author Spider infestation in Malawi. Please help me!

Hi there - My girlfriend is spending some time in Africa, teaching poor
kids to read.

She's been given this "chalet" with badly fitted windows with holes
where spiders get in! Her bed is in netting to keep away mozzies etc,
but she's still quite scared about the big spiders that are coming in a
lot!

What is the best and easiest form of spider (and mozzie) repellant out
there? Are the mains powered gagets any good? Like this one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

The ultrasonic devices are a waste of money. They simply do not work. I
would invest my money in a good sprayer and some good sprays. Get some
Wettable Powders to mix with water and spray the chalet with it that will
work well on spiders. There are many different ones.

You can check out this website to purchase the products you need, they may
have them. I am not connected with it.

Good luck.

The powered gadgets are useless..they do provide another place for small
spiders to hide however. If they have access to the pyrethroid based
insecticides a barrier out several feet from the foundation..up the side
of the exterior walls and around the wall penetrations and corners
inside can help. Assuming mozzies are mosquitos, spraying the outside of
the structure and any shady areas on the property will help cut back on
mosquitoes. Big spiders and scorpions will be the last of the
arthropods to be effected from insecticide...it won't be a cure.

The reason they don't work is that the pests evolve quickly. I have seen
evolution in action here when fleas were a problem in our house before our
loving and much loved dog passed away. I tried an electronic pest repeller
back then and it only lasted a few weeks to approximately 1 month. Looks
like sprays are the way to go. Good luck and later!

I thought the reason these device were worthless is because insects are
deaf.

Also, what's the point of insects making sound (like crickets) if they are
deaf?

Well Scooter, I believe Crickets do that as a mating ritual. They feel
the vibrations. Anything else?

What else is hearing then sensing vibrations?

Also, IIRC crickets are able to make 3 kinds of sounds:

- calling song
- courting song
- a "go away" sound

(BTW, even with Google one can quote when replying)
