Okay, I'll put POV in another way (than my last post).

I know they were not into what we would call "scientific theory".
But a lot of good 'rules for living' were still passed down,
either by religion, by observation, or by superstition & myths.

It certainly seems to me that at some point in time, some
village might have had a larger mice/rat preditor population
(cats or terriers) and if they were more successful,
why did not the practice spread?
