what pest could this be?

| Hello,
We have a 2-story house with a chimney & attic
here in north atlanta burbs.
At night for several days now, we hear knocking sounds from the
roof. There is occasionally some scratching noise as well.
During the day, the animals don't bother us much at all.
The strange thing is that this started after we had the house
power washed and painted.
Is there a web page or something to tell what animal
it could be based on the sounds it makes?
Thanks for any advice!

There are always exceptions, but the rule of thumb that seems to work is
scratching at night is usually rats/mice, squirrels more of day time
activity..if you are in an area that has flying squirrels, they seem to
be a nocturnal animal also. The description I get for opossum or
raccoon seems to be "it sounds like a person is up in the attic"

Oh, if only Noah would of been a bit more wise,
he surely would of swatted those two flies.
