Author Cat repellents. Will they attract rats?

Hello. Thanks for reading

I'm writing from Latin America. I'm looking for a repellent for strayed
house cats. I have posted a message to alt.cats, rec.pets,
rec.pets.cats.health+behav and I was recommended to use either vinegar
or coffee grounds. I'm also considering using sulfur, pepper or the
only commercial cat repellent I have found in my country: four paws's
cat & dog repellent. I'm concerned because I've read in the Internet
that some cat repellents might repel some cat species and attract some
other cat species. This worries me because there is garbage on the
street in my neighborhood and I have seen rats occasionally, and I
wonder if any of these repellents might also attract rats.

So my question is: would vinegar, pepper, coffee grounds, sulfur or
four paws's cat repellent attract rats?

You can take a glance at four paws's cat repellent at this link:

http://www.animalworldnetwork.com/foparein10oz.html

The label reads:

"Active ingredients:
Methyl Nonyl Ketone: 1.9%
Related Compounds: 0.1 %
Inert Ingredients: 98.0%

If needed, you can read my post to alt.cats, rec.pets,
rec.pets.cats.health+behav at this URL:

No I don't believe that Fourpaws will attract rodents. I know that Vinegar
works well for repelling cats I have personally used it myself with great
results. If you want to use it and have good luck with it mix it 3 parts
vinegar to one part water and that will get rid of just about any stray in
your area. Use it about once a week for a couple of months and you should
not have anymore problems with the strays. I cannot speak about the coffee
grounds as I have not used them nor have I ever heard of anyone using them.
Sulfur may work I would say it would work better than coffee grounds, and
yes pepper will work but you need quite a lot of it to be effective
considering you may have to go around a large area. Also pepper will blow
away easily.

If it were me I would start with the vinegar, also note use the brown
vinegar not the white vinegar it works better.

Thank you so much for your kind answer. Just one more question: would
either vinegar, coffee, sulfur or pepper attract rodents?

Thanks again for reading.

The only one that may possibly attract rodent, and this is not factual this
is only a thought, I would say would be the coffee. I can find out for you
and update you as soon as I do. I will post the answer here as soon as I
have it. The guy that will have the answer is very busy because this is
rodent season and it may take him a day or two to answer but I will email
him and when he answers I will post.

In the mean time he may see this post and answer himself if so that will be
good too.

Hehehe...is that a shout out to me ;-) ?

What attracts rodents....hmmmm....Contrac Blox!

But seriously folks, (sorry, it's been a bit of a crazy day here...I'm
moving offices again). Amoungst that list coffee would probably be
the most likely, if that's all we get to choose from. In the larger
spectrum, it's really hard to say as tastes tend to vary. In very
general, whatever they are eating already is a good choice, i.e. if
you are in a location where the food products contain vinegar and the
rats are eating these food, I'd stick with vinegar.

Again, thank you so much for writing such kind and informative answers.
This is a wonderful newsgroup, you guys really rock!

Mr. Riekena, It seems to me I may have been misunderstood. I want to
repel both cats and rats. I need a cat repellent that will keep cats
away and will not bring rats into my patio. I have read rats eat
grains, so I guess coffee and pepper may attract them. I have also read
they like to eat rotten food, and that makes me think they may like
vinegar. Sulfur woks good with dogs, but knowing rats would even eat
feces... Do you think coffee, pepper, vinegar or sulfur may attract
rats?

Sulfur or pepper will deter rodents, and kill their gnawing appetites,
Usually rodents are repelled with Mint, Camphor, Naphthalene, Sulphur, in that
order. Mint, Camphor are about $50 an ounce..too pricy for the quantity used,
but rodent repellant is %30 and %70 Sulphur..pretty stinky but can replace 30
mouse/rat traps.

Naphthalene/Mothballs is 4X the density of air, so using it in the attic
'like churches' will really ruin your appetite downstairs...
