| Hi there,
Two days ago, I was doing some lawn work in the front of my house [9
years old, finished basement, 2 car carriage]. And I saw a bunch
[approx. less than 50] of termites, on the mulch.
Back of my house near the desk, I moved a small rock [15 pounds] and
under that I saw a bunch [approx. less than 20]. I did NOT see any
visible activity around my house other than these two places.
I have a termite repair warranty contract with local exterminating
company. So, I called them to come and take a look at it. A person came
and looked at all the baiting stations around my house and said that he
did not see any activities. Also he said that there is nothing to worry
about now, because no activities are found in the baiting stations.
The bunch that I saw in the front lawn is ten feet away from the
foundation. I am less concerned about that. However, in the back of my
house where I saw very small group under a rock which is two feet from
the foundation and one foot from a baiting station as well.
Here are questions,
a. Is it usual that I could see some activities near the foundation?,
even though my house perimeter is treated with termidor.
b. Am I over reacting for something that is just common?
c. If we don't see any activity in the baiting stations, is that
means we are ok?
Baiting stations are 5 feet away from each other and they are 14 of
them around my house which is 1900 sq.ft living area
d. What other precaution measures can I take?
I have signed-up with this local exterminating company to monitor the
termite activities. Treated my home perimeter with termidor. What else
I could do?
Please advise me.
Thanks

The treatment would of been done right next to the foundation so until
they have foragers get into the treated area you can see them near the
home at times, once some foragers from the colony you have seen have
started to get into the treated zone they will die out.
b. Am I over reacting for something that is just common?
Anytime you see something questionable your treating company probably
would like to be made aware.
c. If we don't see any activity in the baiting stations, is that

No, just means they haven't moved into the bait stations. But by no
means does it mean there is a problem too.

My preference would be to get something on the interior of the home.
There is always a small chance that they could show up from under the
home and not get immediately into the perimeter treated zone. If the
home is a slab it might not of been a bad idea to have the bath trap
areas,if any, treated and if it is pier/beam maybe treat the backside of
the dirt filled porches, once again if any. Make sure you don't allow
the grade of the ground get higher than the foundation, be it dirt or
leaf matter/grass clippings, and keep the wood pile from up against the
home.

No you're not wrong to react to this. Alot of times termites will
forage along the homes perimeter. I was relieved when you said your
home was treated with Termidor. Just because the termite monitors
aren't getting receptive hits does not conclude that activity is not
nearby, as you clearly witnessed this. However, allow your termite
company to do what their responsibility is. Again, I was glad to see
your home was treated with Termidor as a backup. Just make sure your
having your home interior inspected annually. Also, termites will
continue to forage within inches of the grade which is typical. Once
they do come upon the barrier of Termidor that's when Termidor will do
its' job.
Take Care.

PCOpug,
The mulch is 2 years old and it is less than a half inch thick.
Thanks again.
