| Hi Lar,
I've found a local company (Total Services -- have you heard of them?)
that is willing to completely treat my house with termidor for $900.
This includes a guaranty and a $90 per year renewal fee. He also said
he'd charge me half ($450) up front and let me make payments (in spite
of a poor credit rating) for the rest.
The owner claims that he is giving me a great deal, which I believe is
true. But I'd like to hear from you.
He said they'd trench the whole area around the house and get under the
house to trench the support beams or pillars or whatever they're called.
What do you think? Feel free to ask questions.
Thanks,

If the piers (pillars) are of the concrete variety, they need to treat the
area on top of the piers where the beam rests. Trenching around piers is
not advisable whether they are of treated wood or concrete, a structural
thing that most pest control personnel are unaware of as they are not
structural engineers. Don't disturb the soil around the piers.
Trenching around a slab foundation can cause stress cracks. This is due to
the water content difference in the soil between where the water settles
around the house and under the foundation. These cracks can be either
vertical or horizontal or both.
Trenching a 6 feet or so beyond the perimeter of a slab foundation is
usually okay. Pier perimeter trenching is not advisable period. Am not a
pest control person, but I do know foundations. If you're not sure, see a
licensed home inspector for advice on this subject.

The trenching will be no more than 6 inches of the top soil along the
foundation and piers. It will keep the termiticide in place. Then the
dirt that was raked away will be raked back in place.

Sounds OK Sue...the one thing about Termidor is that it is pretty much
idiot proof. Chances are they use their spray rig for other services so
it should be rinsed before adding the termidor, but I'm sure they will.
The only way to know if it is a deal is to compare it with other
companies in your area, local guys not the Nationals.

No I agree we are not structural engineers but the companies that make the
products we use like Termidor in this case would be BASF I feel certain have
consulted their engineers and have included their directions in the chemical
label. So if you want to know how to treat with this product do what we all
do we abide by the law and read the label before giving advice.

You need to seek some advice on the advice you are giving, when you treat
for termites you DO NOT TRENCH 6 FEET AWAY FROM THE STRUCTURE. If you did
you would be in violation of the label and in essence in violation of the
law. So before you start giving advice on Pest Control read a label and
understand what it says. BASF has many engineers working for them and I feel
certain they have explored your claim before they put it on the label.
Besides like Lar said the trench is no more than 6 inches deep and once it
is filled with Termidor it is backfilled with the dirt that was removed. I
have been in this business for 15 years and have never seen a slab crack
because of a termite trench, nor have I seen problems from trenching around
the piers.
But please if you are going to give advice make sure it is good information.
To quote a good friend of mine "misinformation is as dangerous as
mis-application!"

Sue, if I may add to this, It sounds like a good deal to me as well. What is
the linear footage of your house? That will make it easier to know if it is
a real deal or not.

I don't know the linear footage. Sorry.

The bid they gave you should have had a graph with it and on that graph
should have the linear footage somewhere. I say should have but it may not
so if it doesn't don't worry about it. Do you know how long and how wide you
house is approximately?
