Author Need opinions on Permethrin for termites

I live about an hour west of Chicago in Illinois.
I have just started to talk to pest control professionals
in my area. I need to control carpenter ants and
termites.

One professional I talked to said that he used Dragnet
which is permethrin. He seemed to be fairly knowledgable
about pest control in my area of town. The company has
been in business for 40 years. I have read that a lot of you
recommend Termidor so I asked him about it. He said that
it was expensive by comparison & that the residual effect of
about 5 years was the same as Dragnet.

I have noticed some mud tunnels in between two closely
spaced joists in my basement ceiling. It is at the junction where
the basemented portion of the house meets with a slabbed portion.
The oak flooring in the room above shows signs of damage.

I recently sprayed the exterior of my house with diazinon.
This caused activity with the carpenter ants. I have seen many
more of them in the house & most of them are dropping dead.

Comments are welcome.

All termiticides have to pass government testing that they are 100%
effective in field tests for at least 5 years. So in that regards they
are similar...termidor is the only product on the market since chlordane
to be 100% effective in the field tests for more than 7 years and is now
over 10 years. My personal opinion of dragnet is that I would never use
it on termite work I would have to guarantee. Termidor is over twice as
expensive as a number of the lower end products on the market, but then
you can get better protection of a structure and not have to use as much
as you have to with a cheaper product.

After a termidor treatment your ant problems will also be gone for
probably a year

Why does the Termidor work for 5+ years for termites but
only 1 year for the ants ?
The guy I talked to said that trenching for termites was outdated.
He says he uses rods with different size nozzles on them to
inject/pump the termicite into the ground.

When treating for ants it will be exposed to the elements
(heat/sunshine) and breaks down as when treating for termites it is
injected into the ground thus protected.

Since termidor is one of the newer products on the market and it is
applied by trench/treat... I wouldn't call "trenching" outdated. It
doesn't really matter I guess what method is used as long as the right
amount is applied.

He needs to read the label of the products he is using. Termidor is used by
both trenching and rodding. Trenching is not outdated for termites, what I
would say is outdated is a guy that will not step up to the plate and spend
the money for the better prodyucts to protect your home with. I have seen
Dragnet fail miserably in many instances. I have yet to see Termidor fail
the first time, that is worth the difference in price to me.
