My home was infested with carpenter ants a few years ago and i had to hire a
pro to get rid of them. He told me that I should spray the foundation of my
house each spring and fall with Diazinon. A couple of years ago, the
province of Ontario (possibly all Canada) banned the sale of Diazinon and I
can't seem to find a suitable substitute. A powdered insecticide was
suggested, but the exterminator said it will just wash away with the rain,
whereas the diazinon will dry and won't wash off. The chemicals he uses are
not available to the general public.

Does anyone know of an insecticide that is effective on ants like diazinon
that is available to the general public?

Almost anything you buy will be as good as diazinon...it might of lasted
a week to ten days once applied, that's why it was able to be used for
home use. Ortho makes a product called Home Defense Max which the
active is bifenthrin .05% which should work for you pretty good.
