I walked around the house and found three area were small ants were making a
beeline from the ground, over the stucco walls, into the attic. This is
Southern California.

Could these be carpenter ants? If so, what can or should do about them?

Thanks for nay input

Easiest description for carpenter ants are that are a very large ant.
Probably argentine ants or if you smash one and sniff and there is a
perfumed odor it is Odorous House Ants. Terro ant gel works well on both
or a number of generic ant baits may work...go with the gel rather than
granules. If you can find a nest source in the ground you may want to
treat that area too with a general insecticide.
