I have discovered a large colony of ants living and eating my hot tub.
The ants have black heads and abdomens but the thorax is red in colour
they are also quite large maybe 1/4 - 3/8 of an inch in length.
I have sprayed some ant killer in the foam surrounding the tub and they
are jumping out like crazy and dying. However, I am concerned they will
come back this winter. Anyone had this type of problem.
Oh and what kind of ants are these.

From what you have described they sound like carpenter ants. Have you
noticed a sawdust type of substance anywhere around the hottub? If so this
is the frass that they kick out as they are burrowing into the wood to nest.
The spray has probably killed out several of them however there could still
be many left in the wood. I would suggest getting a dust that you can inject
into the areas where the ants are going in and that will probably do much
better. If they are going up underneath the hottub and not actually in the
wood then you will have an easier time getting rid opf them but you will
have to drain the tun and lift it up so you can spray the ants on the
underside of the tub.

I wish you all the very best

Probably a type of carpenter ant. Hot tubs are common areas where they
can accumulate.
