What's biting me?!?!?!?!

| Good morning everyone,
I recently started lurking this newsgroup to see if I could find a solution
to my problem. I moved into my new apartment in October. I vacated my last
apartment for several reasons, one my lease was up, two, every morning I'd
wake up with a fresh bite or bites on my face. Now I'm not sure what the
possible pest might be as I have never been able to catch them in the act or
see them crawling anywhere.
But I know they only attack me at night and the bites on my face always seem
to have an almost perfectly linear pattern. Almost like someone playing
connect four on my face.
My fear is I think I may have brought these damn things with me to my new
place and it's frustrating as I thought I took every precaution I could have
to not bring them with me. Made sure to do all my laundry before bringing
the clothes to my new place. I didn't even bring any of the furniture I had
at the old apartment, save for an ironing board and an air matress.
Unfortunately I think these things may have hitched a ride on the many boxes
I brought with me... Anyway, I'd like to get a professionals opinion on what
it might be. I have always thought that they problem is bed bugs but I never
see any of the typical signs. Such as blood on my sheets or pillow casings.
I vaccuum constantly and have washed all my laundry and bed sheets with
boric detergents. I even have a "professional" pest control person coming to
spray my apartment. I have a feeling this guy is clueless and has no idea
what the hell he's doing. One he didn't even properly inspect my apartment,
all he did was spray some kind of solution around the parimeter of my
apartment with something that is supposed to get the bugs to crawl out
because as he says it "Drives them crazy" He didn't use any of that drione
dust even though i requested he try, he said it was going to be of no use
and it's only for attics..
Anyway I'm at the point where I feel I'd rather try to do it myself since I
basically have an empty apartment with no furniture at all. I think it would
be easier to treat the apartment myself since it's practically empty and I
don't want to buy ANY furniture till I completely eradicate these little
bastards...whatever they may be..
I really could use some professional advice, and if any of you professionals
are located in South Florida it'd be real cool cause if I fail I'd rather
try someone who's dealt with this stuff.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Alex.

You might try to get the flat glue boards for mice/insects that you find
at home depot and place them around your bed and along the baseboards of
the rooms effected. Capturing the culprit will be the first step to know
what is the best approach. Saying that, this time of year especially,
all over the country pest control companies get complaints of mystery
bites. Almost all that I deal with turn out to be due from the static in
the air causing tiny particles of paper and fiber to become rigid and
irritate the skin actually causing whelps that look like various insect
bites and if becomes infected and irritated can break the skin causing
sores.

Yup, I did the glue board thing and didn't catch anything. Also put carpet
tape all around my matress to see if it would snag anything and no dice.
I guess your theory about the tiny particles could be true, only I notice
that it always happens in the same area. close to my mouth and nose area.
And actually recently I've been getting bites everywhere
not just the face. This has been going on for many months, not just
recently. Not sure what to do now...Could it be mites?

mites would be seen crawling around and caught in the glue traps..if you
have a night light that plugs into an outlet, plug one in a low outlet
and place a glue board there and see if anything is attracted to the
light.

The first step is to determine whats causing the marks; if they are not
pest - related then a pesticide is obivously not the solution. Your
description of the shape of the marks do not suggest bed bugs, and
starting on your face does not suggest things like scabies; Lars is
right, there are a number of things that can cause this other than
insects etc, so i would recommend as a first step a visit to a good
dermatologist - have him put some skin scrapings under a microscope,
and look at the markings. They can usually zero in on things such as
bedbugs/mites/lice very fast. Have you been exposed to insulation
during this time? ....no need to apply drione into crevices, if there
arent any little beasties in those crevices.

| I am in a situation close to yours. I moved into a furnished apt. and
started getting red marks all over. My Dr said it was poison ivy but after
a month it was apparent that was wrong. I went to a dermatologist and did
some research and it was bed bugs. We tried pest control 5 times but it
did nothing! We moved out and were very careful to inspect everything but
our friends came along with us. The eggs are not visible to the naked eye
but adults are. I have seen them in dim lighting and they look so harmless
but they are not. I have tried a non toxic product called clean free as
well as herbal black cohosh and it helps to reduce the problem but not
eliminate it. I have found on many web sites that they are hard to get rid
of completely. I am going to try a new non toxic product called steri-fab.
The reason i think you may have the same problem is at first my bites were
everywhere except my face. I am up north and it was warm enough to sleep
in a tshirt. Now it's cold and after my experience I would never wear less
than a long sleeved shirt and long pants to bed. I have started to get the
bites on my face and hands. It is in a line as you described. It was
always like that on my body as well. I was told that's how they feed like
in a row of them. Through all of this my husband never had any red marks.
I was told that people have different reactions or none at all. Even
different areas of the body in the same person can have different
reactions. A lot of the non toxic products can be used on your skin as
well as pets and are affective for other skin aflictions like mites or
scabies. I hope this helps you. I research this almost daily as it is just
gross and I look like an acne scarred teen instead of an adult and I
always had good skin.

JhannaE,
Curious to hear if you are finding blood on your bed sheets.
