bait resistance in mice?
|
|
|
| On and off for about two years now, we've tried to get rid of the mice in
our house and garage with Hawk bait blocks
(http://www.motomco.com/h_hawk.htm ) with bromadiolone. We've probably put
out about 30 of these blocks in bait stations and out of the way places, and
they all get eaten, but we've NEVER found or smelled one dead mouse. (I've
also sealed up all cracks and openings I could find that lead into the
house.)
Does this mean that our mice are anti-coagulent resistant? I'm having a
difficult time finding any stores that sell the higher-powered
non-anticoagulent bait blocks with Bromethalin in them. Since these Hawk
bait blocks aren't working, would it do any good to use a different
anticoagulent bait with a different active ingredient, or should I keep
searching for the higher powered nonanticoagulent bait blocks?
Any advice would be appreciated!!

I'd be more surprised if you found the rodents... I rarely hear my
customers mention finding dead ones. if they are eating it, they should
be dead in a few days, hopefully away from the home.

Finding dead mice is fairly uncommon. I've used Hawk and such in my
garage nearly every fall and have only found dead mice once or twice.
Always it's when I'm doing the Spring clean up. I'll unroll a piece of
carpet or a tarp or something and find a single dead mouse all dried
up in the center (no, the bait does not dry the mice - time does).
Thus far I have never heard of any proven resistance to bromadiolone
baits, even resistance to warfarin baits is VERY rare. A note too,
resistance doesn't mean "proof," it just means that it takes a bit
more.
I should mention, I'm one of the technical folks for the company that
makes Hawk.
