I am in New Orleans and have fleas in my garage and in my lawn. I
bought a 2 gal sprayer and a bottle of "Ant, Flea, Tick, and Mosquite
Killer" that contains 2.5% permethrin. The application notes say to
dilute 6 oz of the concentrate to 10 gallons to cover 1,000 sq ft.

Is this material as effective for killing fleas as anything I am
likely to be able to buy OTC?

I know that fleas live in a carpet on the garage floor because they
jump onto my legs when I walk on it. Are they likely to be everywhere
else too? Should I spray the garage any differently than the lawn?

How many days after the first application should I re-apply to kill
the next generation? After the second application, how often should I
repeat?

There is a 30% chance of showers today (and most days during the
summer here). Is it important to spray the lawn on a day when (light)
rain is not predicted?

Permethrin will be a short lived insecticide and in the EC formulation
that you have will not give much residual on any concrete part of the
garage. For the garage a fogger will probably be as effective as
anything else, probably doing three treatment 7-10 days apart. Only use
one fogger and take precautions where there might be a hot water heater
flame or spark from a freezer. If most of the floor is carpeted go to a
pet store or vet and buy an aerosol carpet treatment, easy to use and
will probably have the insect growth regulator to keep eggs and larvae
from developing, once again repeat treatments may be necessary every 7-
10 days. Also vacuum if you can as much as possible.

Spraying shortly after a rain shower can be beneficial though make sure
the flea spray has a chance to dry before the next wetting, usually an
hour is long enough.

Lar,
Thanks for the advice to turn off the pilot light before fogging the
garage. I imagine that forgetting to do so could turn a simple
project into a tragedy and there's way too much of that around this
town already.

When I purchase the three foggers, should I look for a different
active ingredient than permethrin, or will the cheapest product that
says fleas on the label do just fine?

The garage is concrete with a couple of throw rugs. Last week, my son
brought his drum set home from the house where his band practiced and
put it on the infested rug. I presume the fogger will damage the
laquer finish. How long after the application can he safely move them
back into the garage?

Finally, should I keep the dog and cat in the house for an hour after
spraying the lawn?

Anyone of them will be pretty much the same, though you might look for
one that has the insect growth regulator (IGR) listed on the label.

An hour would be more than enough time, I would think just draping an
old sheet over the set would be good enough, but removing them will make
sure.

Bob

You want them off till it dries, which this time of year an hour is
probably enough time, though if a rain shower comes along before it
dries from the application you may want to keep them off longer.

Bob I take it from reading your posts and conversation with Lar you still
have the animals in the house. Go to the Vet and get Frontline and put it on
the animals and let it rid your house of fleas. Frontline advertises that it
will eliminate your home of fleas within 24 to 48 hours and it works. I have
three dogs in my house, I am an exterminator and I never have a need to
treat my house for fleas. I use the original formula Frontline not the new
formula that kills mosquitoes because it seems not to work as well, and I do
not have fleas. All three of my dogs go inside and outside both.

Good luck and if you don't want to use the Frontline what Lar has been
telling you is also great advice.

Hello Tim,
Thanks for your comments.

I've been using Frontline Plus on our dog for the past two months. It
does a pretty good job of keeping the fleas off her but I still pick
one or two from her belly (where the hair is especially short) at
least once a week. I believe they jump on her when she's in the back
yard so I purchased the sprayer and insecticide to try to keep down
the population there.

Our dog doesn't go in the garage much which is probably why we have a
particular problem in there.
