Hi all, I've just had my yearly emergence of flying ants and was wondering
what to do about them (and no they're definitely not termites).

I'm actually getting them inside too. They were coming out of a tiny hole
in the drywall of one of my bedrooms and also at the side door in the
kitchen. The worst is between my garage doors were thousands pour out in
the evening for 2 or 3 consecutive days.

I've always heard that they're harmless for the most part, but would like
to 86 them if I can. The problem is that after they swarm, they disappear.

How would I treat this?

I also have an issue with carpenter ants and was going to buy some Maxforce
Gel along with some Advance 375. Would this be effective on other ants as
well?

Thanks!

I'm having them all over Prescott, Arizona too. Bigtime!

Maxforce FC and Advance 375 or Advance Carpenter Ant are excellent
baits. One tip is to make sure you don't contaminate the bait. Don't
bait where you've sprayed (and its best not to spray carpenter ants as
you can drive them into another part of the house) because they won't
eat it then. Don't apply the bait if you smoke without first washing
your hands... you might accidently touch the bait.

Be sure to follow the label directions.

The ants coming out of the drywall does concern me though... i believe
you have an infestation actually inside that wall. Carpenter ants can
burrow into wood to nest and if you leave them there long enough they
can do a significant amount of damage.

The ones in your garage are a very big concern. It takes a new
carpenter ant colony several years to build up enough resources and
troops to produce swarmers. You obviously didn't get rid of them last
year. If you can't it'll then be time to call a professional, if
you're not one. If you are, i recommend Termidor and Phantom. I'm
having EXCELLENT success with those two products in my neck of the
woods.

Just stay on top of it and you should be OK.

I'd go with just the bait and see what happens....as long as they eat it
they will die off.

Thanks Happybattles, but I think you misunderstood.

The swarmers that I have are not Carpenter Ants, but are smaller and are
being pushed out of their nest by medium sized dark orange/yellow ants.

I'm no expert, but I believe they're two different problems and was
wondering if the Maxforce and Advance would work on both.

I'm also wondering what the difference is between the Maxforce Gel and the
Maxforce Carpenter Ant Gel. They're both for the sugar needs and they both
contain .001% Fipronil. The only difference I see is that one is almost 3
times as much money.

Hmmm....

Maxforce makes many types of baits. Fipronil is excellent for all
types of ants, but because Maxforce made one and Advance made the
other, the difference will be in the palatability of each.

Try the cheap stuff first. If they eat it, great. If not, try the
expensive stuff. If they won't eat either, I'd switch to Maxforce
Granules or Advance 375 which are protien baits.

Ants change their food preferance depending on the time of year and the
needs of the colony. You can try moisture, sweet and protien baits.
They'll take one of them. Gel baits usually provide moisture which
makes them like two baits in one.

Let us know which one works for you.

Here in Arizona I'm having great success with both gel and granule.
I'm using Advance 375, Advance Carpenter Ant Bait Gel, Gourmet Ant
Bait, Terro and Niban. I try a little sample of each until I get
activity and then just run with that one. Pretty standard procedure.

Where are you located, anyway?
