Author cockroach problem in my apartment

I've lived in my current apartment since May '05. It's a pretty nice
building, built in the 80's and thoroughly remodeled two years ago.

I had no bug problems until the end of March, maybe early April of this
year. Then bang I constantly started seeing them in and around my
dishwasher. Not sure how they got there, maybe I brought some in from a
grocery bag, or they just crawled in, or they come from a neighboring
apartment. Who knows.

I tried a couple of repellent and trap products, they helped some but
nothing long term. I tried to be really vigilant about cleaning in the
kitchen, storing food in tight containers, not much help there.

Called my landlord, first thing he checked is the dishwasher for leaks.
They pulled it out from the cabinetry and everything, but found no
leaks.

So they send in an exterminator, he spends maybe five minutes in the
kitchen apply anti-termite repellent/poison. Doesn't seem to do much at
all.

Exterminator guy eventually comes back last week, applies a different
product, and very quicky I see results. The first couple days I still
see bugs in my dishwasher, but they acted a bit odd. No longer
scattering behind & under the dishwasher like before. They just stop
in their tracks. So I rather easily kill them and go on about my
business.

Now for the last few days I have not sees a single bug around or in my
dishwasher, at last I have peace again.

So my questions after that long ramble:

Is this sort of odd/drunk/stupid behavior typical after an effective
application of pest killer?

And, anyone know what product the guy might have used the second time
around? He used an applicator that vaguely looked like an old timey oil
can. Cause I'd sure like to get my hands on the stuff if this ever
happens again.

It would be just guessing what he may of used but if he mentioned the
first time a termite product I would guess it was Phantom which also
would take a week or more for good results, but with that product it
usually is end of story. The good results from the second trip may of
been the timing of the phantom kicking in. As far as behavior after a
treatment once again it depends on what was used. some products create
a quick kill and chases them out others it takes a few days for it to
effect them and they die slowly where they happen to be.

If it was Phantom, you should be in good shape. However, being in an
apartment, you could be reaping the benefits of someone else NOT having
an exterminator. Many people are embarassed or trying to hide
something so they won't tell anyone that they have a problem.

Unfortunately you also have to make sure that when hiring an exterminator on a monthly basis they are still using a product expected to last more than 30 days.

A lot of times the exterminator comes out using a product that lasts a little less than 30 days. Its not an accident. Your roaches have just started to come back and then a few days later your hero the exterminator arrives and you are happy to see him and renew that monthly contract forever.

There are products they can use that will last a lot longer, 6 months or more. If your roaches continually come back every 3 or 4 weeks then you might ask them to upgrade the chemicals they use to eradicate roaches.

He may have used Demon if it is still available to use in your state. As far as getting your hands on the stuff, many states require you to be licensed in pest control to purchase those products.

The technician may have used a bait. After consuming baits, roaches act
like they are "running out of gas", and may actually die on their feet.
Baits are an excellent choice for roach control.
