How can I decrease the squirrel population in my back yard? I have an
inground pool. The trees shading the pool are predominently pine trees. The
pool is 35 years old and I have never had this problem before. The squirrels
are eating the pine cones and dropping the remainder, that looks like a corn
cob, into the pool along with all these little sheath pieces that are a real
hassle for me to keep the skimmer clear of all of this debris.

Any solutions (other than cutting down the trees) to eliminate or decrease
the squirrel population would be greatly appreciated! Thanks...Lynnb

You could try keeping a couple of traps set in the yard to reduce the
population...maybe baited with peanut butter and bird seed. I would
suggest then dunking the traps in a container of water rather than
driving down the road and releasing them.

I have a similar problem with my pool, except it's the deciduous trees
dropping leaves. AFAICT, it one of the challenges of owning a pool...
and trees. I bought it this way, but the predominant philosophy of
landscaping over the last 50 years is that foliage will always remian
the same size or the owner will perfrom the necessary maintenence to
accomplish same.

Squirrels are very smart... I would have to suggest busting a cap in
the XXX of a few until they get the idea. I'd use a pellet gun if real
firearms are prohibited and in either case keep it a secret from law
enforcement, fairer sexes and children. Pick up the remains and
dispose of them discretely... in a nearby park's garbage, or off in the
woods somewhere.
