Looks like a mosquito, but I'm not getting bitten by them, and mosquitoes
"love" me. I live in Cleveland, Ohio, and I'm getting a lot of these in my
kitchen, hanging around at night on the wall by the lit fluorescent light
above the sink. I thought maybe midges, but we get those off Lake Erie in
late May or early June. I have links below to 3 pics I took of them. And are
they a problem and how do I get rid of them? Thanks much.

It won't bite because it is a male, only females can bite. Though not
sure it is a mosquito at all...remember seeing a web site once stating
that a mosquito look a like could be separated from mosquitos because
mosquitos won't have green coloration (that yours seems to have).

You have some nice pics..emailing them to a college prof, PHD in
entomology probably could give you the sure answer and species you
have...hmm even posting them at bugguide.net may do it.

These are Mayflies. I have a boat on the Ohio River and we get them about
the same time and they will go toward the light. They come by the thousands
around our Marina, it will be a swarm of them for a couple of months. You
have to spray your boat off just about everyday you are there and it could
actually be done twice a day.

An entomologist I know saw a pic and he "thinks" they are midges. I then
found these pics on the web.

Thanks much everybody. Guess they are mayflies or midges as we call them
here, The pics at http://www.origins.tv/entomology/diptera.htm seemed to be
pretty much what I have, even the dot on each wing. This baffled me as I
thought these critters came out only in late Spring, not late Summer. I
noticed my neighbors are getting a fair number of these in and around their
houses today also. At least they don't seem to do any harm, I just have to
check all my plates and cups before I use them so I don't have a late night
snack of midges.
