nocturnal animal on roof/attic

| Hello,
Now that it's getting a bit colder at night (georgia), we are hearing a
lot
of noises coming from the roof and sometimes in the attic.
Last year, we had the same problem, but when looking at the attic
there were no feces.
We haven't seen what rodent(s) it might be, but it causes heavy
thumping noises and some scratching.
This is a 2-story house next to a wooded lot.
It is becoming impossible to sleep at night. The noises start anytime
between 2 am and
6 am.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for any ideas.

If there are trees within 4-5 feet of the roof raccoons could be the
heavy thump...with limbs closer, opossums are another possibility. If
these may be the culprits, cutting back tree limbs probably will solve
the problem.
