I live in a semi-rural area with a large rat population. A local pest
control company has been placing Bell ground level bait stations
around the neighborhood. I believe they are using Contrac Blox
containing Bromadialone. We have quite a few cats in the area, as well
as an active owl population. I hear the owls hooting most nights, but
lately -- nothing. Assuming the owls eat the rats, is Bromadialone
going to poison the owls, and how about the cats? The pest control guy
insists that it's perfectly safe for everything but rats and mice, but
I'm skeptical. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Most baits will kill only what eats it and nothing else. So if a cat eats a
rodent that died from bait, nothing will happen to it. Antidote is Vitamin K
in case a animal eats the bait itself

The only issue I have ever heard of with baits and birds of prey was
with the older generation of baits on some small islands off of the west
coast where the only food source for the birds were the rat/mice on the
in which they had bird kills. In a rural setting, yes they probably
will eat some contaminated rodents, but it will be only a small
percentage of the over all diet..snakes..lizards rodents away from the
baited areas. As far as the cats, I wish they would be effected (ok,
just kidding) They would have to eat a large number of poisoned rats
that had exclusively fed on the baits for a number of days, once again
their diet is going to be not only baited rats but other rodents that
have not found the bait, birds, human garbage, etc.

With this particular rodenticide "Contrac" the chance of a secondary kill is
quite low.

Not knowing specifically about this poison, I do know a bit about the
blood thinner, coumadin (sodium warfarin) because I take it.

Half life in the human body is 4 days and it takes continuous daily
feeding to take a lethal dose. Predator would probably have to eat its
weight in prey to get a lethal dose or maybe a quarter of its weight in
poison containing prey per day. I would think this unlikely.

Also lot of poisons are species specific. It might take 10 to 100 times
as much poison (in mg/kg body weight) to kill one species over another.
Pesticide makers look for the higher toxicity to the pest vs other
animals and humans when developing a new pesticide.

Owls may be leaving your area because there are not enough prey for them.
