Trane compressor not starting
|
|
| Dish Hack 2005-10-11, 11:21 am |
| Two days ago I turned my thermostats to the "Off" position as I was not
planning on being in the home for a couple of days. After returning, I
switched both thermostats (upstairs and downstairs) to "Cool" and
lowered the temp to 76 degrees. I soon realized that the air blowing
out of the vents was not cold, but just the circulation from the fan. I
found the problem to be the outside compressor, it will not start. It
makes a humming noise, then a few clicks, then stops making noise
altogether. I've tried resetting the circuit breaker with no luck. This
unit was working perfectly fine two days ago, so I'm really stumped.
The fan blows air throughout the house whether the switch is on "auto"
or "on". The model in question is a Trane Heat Pump, model XE1000 High
Efficiency Weathertron, it is 4 years old. Any help would be greatly
appreciated as I'm a college student on a tight budget, thanks in
advance.

| The top couple guesses are
10. Whozafritzer has gone floopy.
9. Need Paul to come out and blow it
8. Time for a new one!
7. Needs a hard start kit for the compressor
6. Birds nesting in the contactor
5. Low line voltage
4. Moon is in the southern quadrant, is shading Pluto
3. Circuit breaker is weak
2. Tuition payment due soon, and this is a knife in your back
1. Bad run capacitor
Might want to call an AC guy to come out and look at it.

Do good work.
It's longer in the short run
but shorter in the long run.

This is Turtle.
It sounds like you have a starting system of the compressor defective or the
compressor it'sself is locking up. It could be not too bad of cost but could be
the compressor that is out. now the system it being only 4 years old , there is
a 5 year parts warranty on the compressor so even a compressor may not be that
bad on cost. Now By what you have said , we can not say anything farther as to
what it is with out looking at it.

ok...its broken

This is when most normal people would call their favorite, local,
*competent*, licensed, insured, professionally trained, HVAC technician to
come diagnose and correct the problem. It will most likely be a simple
repair that could have been avoided with regular routine mainenance....You
*do* have your system serviced at least once a year like your supposed
to...don't you??
>I've tried resetting the circuit breaker with no luck. This

Well... lets see... reset the breaker and that didn't fix it, maybe throw a
thermostat at it.... nope, that isn't gonna fix it either......better make
the call.

Yup... its still broke.

Damn, that education has gotta be expensive... mine was, and the continuing
education to keep up with the changes in the industry and new technoligies
still is. Then there are the monthly company expenses, and when its all said
and done, personal salaries, taxes, etc. Then there is all the hurricane
damage to my own home that FEMA isn't gonna spend a dime to fix and my
insurance company is only gonna pay me half of what its gonna cost to
repair(who has an extra $8K-$10K in the bank?)...... then there are the
added surcharges that the supply houses are adding to the parts I need to
fix your comfort system, and the fuel bill for the service trucks has
doubled, and the price of groceries has gone up, as has the electric rates,
with the natural gas rates fixin to do the same.
OH and then theres the 6 million welfare recipients I gotta support too.
If you want sympathy for being on a tight budget, you are gonna have to go
somewhere else.

| Thanks for the speedy and informative reply Turtle. Noon-Air, you're an
A$$hole, but that's evident in your reply. I just purchased the house,
had it inspected prior to the purchase, and of course it passed with
flying colors. Worked perfect one day, compressor not starting two days
later. I was hoping there was a reset procedure or something similar
that might be worth trying. I'm going to inspect the contacts the first
chance I get.
Wasn't looking for sympathy, was just wondering if someone else might
have had a similiar problem with this unit so they could point me in a
direction. I've read half a dozen threads with the same symptoms as
mine, unfortunately the majority of replies were full of sarcasm and
light on the pertinent info. What happened to the days of utilizing the
newsgroups as a tool to enlighten one another, share experiences, and
offer a proffesional opinion? If you have time to disect someone's post
with the shere intent of flaming, get a hobby! Any further useful
information would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Thanx, I could have been more specific had you also posted the following
information;
Model number
Serial number
The measured voltage before and after the contactor,
The measured amperage before and after the contactor,
The measured control voltage to the contactor,
The measured voltage at the compressor,
The measured amperage at the compressor,
The measured amperage at the fan motor,
The measured capacitance of both the fan and compressor run caps.
You want an answer, but don't want it bad enough to pay a tech. You post
with absolutely no *useful* troubleshooting information, and expect a
spot-on definitive answer to fix your problem. The best your gonna get is a
guess(maybe).
And now the rest of the story....

Its *still* broke, and a reset isn't gonna do it.... make the call.
Just for grins.... just how are you gonna "inspect" the contacts??

Exactly.... and if you had researched further, you would have found hundreds
more posts with the same symptoms...yess even from EEs and computer nerds
who thought they could figure it out but seemed to have flunked basic
electicity.

liability lawsuits and Darwin Awards.

the most usefull information is to call a tech..... preferably a Trane
dealer that can do warranty repairs.
FWIW, Those of us actually in the trade, get these same questions several
times daily, day in and day out in phone calls from people that are price
shopping, or want the problem diagnosed over the phone so they can try and
fix it for free. The worst calls are the ones where some bonehead tried to
DIY and let the factor smoke out of a whole lot more than just the original
problem.
Pissyness is not required, just dial the phone to call your local tech and
go away.

Any number of things could have happened to cause your condensing unit to fail
to start. Telling us that you have a Trane model XE1000 is much the same as I
telling you I own a Ford Ranger. Was that a stick shift or automatic? Long bed
or short? V8 or sixbanger? Find the manufacturers data plate on the outdoor
condenser and post all the information on it, and then and only then will you
get more specific information. I will say you have a "builders model" or one
step up. As such, there's probably not any starting components included. Maybe
all you need is a hard start kit.
With your budget and whatnot, what would be cheaper? You f*cking up a $3500
piece of equipment or paying a competent tech to fix it? Keep in mind the only
people authorized for warranty repair are licensed air conditioning contractors.
Thats ANY licensed contractor who also has an account with your local Trane
distributor.

Fish,
I had one of these units on a help call this summer I do occasionally
for low-income people that need assistance.
If I remember correctly, doesn't Trane use the old GE Climatuff recip in
them?
Two things I do recall: Use a hard start, always.... and if you lose the
CCH in cold weather... she's a goner. Is my memory correct? Just
checking to see if I'm really going insane, as my wife says frequently...
To the OP, there are no magic 'resets' here. Don't fool with the circuit
breaker, don't fool with the contactor.... get a Trane rep. out who can
warranty the compressor for you if that's the problem.

| I love how some of you HVAC guys think your work is rocket science. You
have to be the most sensitive class of blue collar workers. You take a
few classes, get a certificate and you have the most complex job known
to man. Was I looking for a specific answer to my situation? NO. Just
curious as to some potential possibilites, you know, generalities.
Luckily I got a useful tip on another newsgroup, appeared to be some
dead bugs between the contacts on the compressor. Working like a charm
now. Too bad I didn't shell out the $80 to have a "licensed" tech
diagnose my problem. I can only hope that your dejected attitudes carry
over into your customer service skills, there's a way to really build

Yup. climatuf recips in all 10 & 11 seer products. typically find start
components in 12 seer. Lately (last 2-3 yrs) I've noticied a huge increase in
new start-ups that wont start up unless the cch has been on 24 hrs OR you wire
in a hard start. Now days every single phase unit i put in gets a hard start
kit.

Guess what? Its NOT rocket science. Its actually quite easy,
especially when that is what you do for a living every day.
Now, you wanna know something really funny?
You have just stated how easy this business is and so have I YET you
have just proved that you are one of the dumbest idiots on this planet
because you couldnt figure out that you had ants in the contactor.
Keep your 80 bucks and spend it on a labotomy.

Good for you, sir. BTW, I'm not a HVAC guy, I'm a licensed master
electrician.
Here's a tip: However you got the dead bugs out of contactor probably
wasn't good enough, as a good HVAC guy would have either thoroughly torn
down and cleaned your contacts, or replaced the damn thing.
As I told you before, contactors are not something for those who aren't
experienced to fool with.... what happens here effects your compressor
and your fan and your wiring.
Enjoy the unit while it runs....

Jake, even more importantly, a competent hvac tech would have installed the
