I wouldn't settle for LTL, or even a truckload, or rather, gimme a
whole goddamn container!
Steve is dreaming of the past. When I quit refrigeration, in 1990, a
30 lb jug of R12 was over $70 US, WHOLESALE. Retail was about $8.00
/lb... By 1993, it had jumped to over $130 a jug WHOLESALE.
R22 wasn't much cheaper, WHOLESALE, at about $45 a jug, but we only
got about $4/lb for it retail.
And I'm in California.
Eight dollars per pound is a GREAT BARGAIN, now, for most
refrigerants.
The only three refrigerants we should ever really need, in low-med
temp refrigeration and hi-temp HVAC are R600a, R290, and R717. DAMN
THE BEAUROCRATS!
I rest my case.

Their prices must not be updated. I bought a 30# jug of r22 and a

Ill call in the morning, but the price I am showing with my online Johnstone
account here, is $56.85 per jug....
And just so everyone knows, the other prices were from my supplier...some of
you have Virginia Airs there...check their prices....might be surprised...

Umm...thats BS, or you were buying from someone that really hated you, cause
I was dealing with Johnstone and Ferguson in Palm Desert back then, and I
never paid over $50 a jug for it then.
Still got an account at teh Ferguson there, since they carry a thermostat
that we cant get here.

Except the part about the "Natural refrigerants".
I especially liked the part about ONLY. They used that word a lot.
The "Natural refrigerants" are ONLY explosive in 1%-10% concentrations.
The morons pushing propane obviously had input there. They have no
regard for safety.
The weenies pushing Hydrocarbons aggressively in Australia.

If I remember right an Alpha fire is one that leaves an ash.
I don't want any "Screaming Alpha's" as customers.

Hmmm, unless my memory fails me, it was NTCC (Formerly Pameco-Aire),
a local distributor. It was circa 1989-1990 when prices spiked.
Over $70 for a jug of R12, and a little more than half that for a jug
of R22. But I shouldn't trust my memory.
I haven't had to buy any since then, but a guy I was working for back
in 1999-2000 was paying considerably more through WCI (not White
Consolidated Industries), and I'm sure they were competitive with
Johnstone. But we worked with mostly R409a and R414b, since R12 was
so damn high.
My latest Johnstone book is about 5 years old, and either buried or
thrown away. Ditto for the other catalogs
I'm too damned busy with computers now to do any refrigeration on a
regular basis anyway. I'm an armchair tech now. :-)

STRAW MAN ARGUMENT!
Natural gas is explosive in the range of 4% to 14%, in air.
BUT, We heat our homes with it, we cook with it, and
sometimes a pilot goes out, or a burner gets left turned on,
with no flame. The house fills with gas, but seldom is the
"ka-boom" to follow.
It CAN happen. A computer store, across the alley from the
refrigeration shop I was working at (to see the irony in this,
read my last post), had a NG explosion, which took out their
front plate glass window. The heater had malfunctioned,
and the resultant explosion knocked out the window. However,
nothing was burned. The force of the explosion exceeded the
flame velocity of methane in air, so it blew the flame out,
too. All it did was blow out the front window.
>The morons pushing propane obviously had input there. They have no
>regard for safety.
You nay-sayers don't fully understand the principles of carburetion.
>The weenies pushing Hydrocarbons aggressively in Australia.
So?
>If I remember right an Alpha fire is one that leaves an ash.
=snarf!=
>I don't want any "Screaming Alpha's" as customers.
And I don't want "Flaming Moe's".
But if the whole ODP story is true, (which I doubt), then wouldn't a
few small, isolated fires or explosions be better than a global
catastrophe? <g,d,r>
Ammonia is flammable, too, and is quite toxic, but it is used in
LARGE systems everywhere.
