Yes , but here Louisiana they use a broom and lightly sweep it with holding it
down the corners with your feet. You can sweep one about 3 times before it will
tear up.

I had a hospital engineer (truly) turn the hepa filters around because the
other side wasn't dirty. It was a great learning experience for him as he
got to sterilize the operating theatre.
To answer the question - yes you can, but you also destroy the integrity of
the filter media and either leave a layer of dirt caking to reduce the
airflow, or suck off a heap of the filter media. Either way you'll probably
add crap to the evap coil and downstream ductwork (Also the crap is probably
full of fungal mould, etc.).
