Author Homeowners can be soooooo cheap
Al Moran

2005-10-23, 10:21 am

About a week ago I go to do a heat maintenance on a 6 month old
American Standard we installed. I am at the thermostat, which happens
to be very close to the closet the system is in. I turn it on and hear
a strange noise when the inducer comes on. I ask the homeowner if he
had a roof put on the house after we installed the furnace, and of
course, the answer is yes. I explain to him the problems that can be
caused by this, then tell him I'll pull the inducer and clean
everything out of there for 99.00. He looks in the system and decides
he can do it himself. Fine I say, but if you mess something up you
void your warranty. So what do you think my first call was yesterday?
That's right, said genius took the motor out and threw the gasket
away, which is causing the pressure switch to not prove pressure
because it is sucking air in around the inducer housing.

So now he pays 59.00 for the service call (diagnostic fee), which he
bitches about because "you knew what was wrong when you came out
here". I have to explain, no, all I knew was that you worked on it.
Then I charge him 5.00 for the gasket and 99.00 to clean the thing
right.

Service Call - 59.00

Gasket - 5.00

Cleaning Inducer - 99.00

Doing it your self - Stupid

Seeing look on customers face when bill is presented - Priceless!

I agree, that is real cheap for a service call. I just charge what
they tell me to charge.

This is Turtle.

I'm sure glade you are not working in Louisiana for this is treated very
differently. Louisiana has a 1 year law about warranty of equipment by the
contractor who put the equipment in. We have so many fly by nite company that
this law was put into effect. A customer that knows about the laws will tell you
right then when you told him you was not fixing it under the warranty, that he
would be calling another contractor to come fix it and then will be filing a
case in small claims court on you, roofing contractor, and anybody involved. you
will appear in the small claims court on monday morning court and sit with the
other contractor that did not want to warrant the equipment. while your there
you better show the customer the exact cause to have it in court that it was not
your fault, but your still going to be one of the defendents on monday morning
small claims court.

The HVAC Company owner & Servicing Tech appearing in court on monday morning --
priceless !

this group , We , and the hvac group as a whole has adopted the ideal that there
is a war between the HVAC companys and the customers on the other side. The
reason this group does not grow is it is drawing a line between the hvac
companys and the customers. then the customers then start drawing the line
between them and the hvac company as being the one out to get them. this is How
we have become the bad guys through the years.

Also i would never get any pleasure out of seeing a person fail at tring to fix
something hisself and the customer today knows about this pleasure getting of
the techs and hvac business owners.

Professionals don't get pleasure out of failure of others !

Practice what you type terry...

Also, your so called law...let me explain something to you...

NC has a THREE YEAR term that you can sued under.
LAs so called law, would be like ANY OTHER states that it would allow for an
inclusion of tampering, and I can tell you now...if what you say is true,
then LA MUST HAVE A STATEWIDE LICENCE, and they dont....
I do know enough that if what you say is true, every so called contractor in
teh state needs to sue the state.

There you go judging the laws of the sates and making them sound like you would
have them and not accept what they are. i do know by your speaking here you do
not know about any of the registration of contractors in Louisiana at all or you
would not be saying all this bull.

Like you say all hvac contractor must have licences in Louisiana to have to have
a 10 years term for fraud if bullshit of your. If this would be true then all
con artist would have to have a state operator licences to steal from the poor
or from the customers.

So by your logic, the customer could blast the thing with some double

I see your not a business man by missing the part of missing work on monday
morning by being a butt hole to a customer. if you know your going to be drawed
into a gun fire here. You would be talking about you helping them with a few
form to explain what the problem was and help dealing with it. here we have to
deal with them. where you live at still let any contractor smile when the do
them wrong. I have run a company just about all my life and have had some good
techs but stupid about business like you. i was told all my life that the
quickest way to the poor house is to let your techs make your judgement calls
for you. well what did your superviser say ?

Al if i thought you knew what a judgement call was , i would discuss it with
you. Now what i've heard here you need a boss like paul and he would be your
kind of boss. Then You would be unemployeed and he will be in a trailor house
bitching about some Turtle fellow.

Yes Al , i'm not that smart in the words of the mouth but i have run a business
for 40+ years and seen just about every way to mess up there is but as you say ,
You don't need to know about the screw up coming your way because you can ask
old Paul the software salesman to guide to though the hard times.

Hey , I'm not kind to Forest but he had some real thought about life to think

IF installed equipment is damaged by something or someone other than the
contractor or manufacturer, I do not believe it is nor it should be covered
under warranty. The first clue was roofers, the second was the homeowner
removeing the inducer, removing the debris, and not putting the equipment
back together properly. It should have been a $300 call.

As with most everything in life, we can measure wealth in many different ways.
For you, that may be surrounding yourself with dollars and material things,
which is perfectly ok.

Just dont make the mistake of assuming everyone else is operating with the same
CHOICE of values, or imply that YOUR choice of values is superior to someone
elses choice of values.

Let me simplify it more for you to understand it.

Jab said the whole state of Louisiana is a Hack.

Turtle says , I can't argue the subject for it might be true.

Sea Breezer says, The whole state of louisiana is a hack , which makes Turtle a
Hack.

Turtle again, If you dream that the whole state of louisiana is a Hack , then
turtle could be a Hack because he lives in a Hacker State.
