Not much heat from heat pump
|
|
|
| I have a 16 year old heat pump. I got the AC repaired this summer. The
AC worked great. But when I started using the heating unit I don't feel
much heat from the duck. It always use emergency heat at first, which
is normal. Then it will use stage one only. But I don't feel the air
from the duck warm. It feels even colder on the second floor. It takes
a while for it to reach the desired temp. I have a digital themostat.
>From my understanding of heat pump it use the same unit for the AC and
heating. If the AC works well I should have no problem with the
heating. I live in Baltimore. The outside temp is not that low right
now. Any one has idea about what could be wrong? Any advisement is
appreciated.

Yep, sounds like something is fucked up. You better get the vaseline,
because you sound like the type that is going to be getting a good hard
fucking.

This is called ' dead duck syndrome'.
You need new ducks.

I would keep the AC unit since it worked so well but at 16 yrs old, Id
recommend getting a new heat pump.
Usually, if you dont get enough heat from the duck you just need to
put both arms around the widest part and squeeze. NOT too hard though.
Sometimes, those ducks leak duck goose out the bottom. That can be a
real mess to clean up.
That would be my best advisement. You might even have to move. I hear
Baltimore isnt good for cold ducks.

"Duck squeezer":
-- An envirnomentalist. From Neal Town Stephenson's novel _Zodiac_.
e.g., Ah, stop being such a duck squeezer and help me pour this sugar in the
fuel tank of that bulldozer over there.
===
But I've also heard the term in reference to tightwads--someone who wouldn't
sell a duck without first squeezing it, thus forcing out for his own
breakfast any unlaid eggs that might be present ....

However, if need be, you can rent a duck stretcher if you squeeze that
duck too hard.

| When central AC and heat pumps start to get "weak", they often need
professional cleaning. And sometimes a shot of freon.
Time to call a service company.

I love it.
How about the fucking superheat or subcool needs to be checked?

Lets pray to some imaginary god that he does not call you....shot of
freon...omg..you are the reason that homeowners tend not to trust techs..
Just look at your post about the Rheem that you have no clue on..that any
legit tech would have had running in minutes....not DAYS like you

SVL- I believe you are talking about a different thread. Scroll back to the
top and read what the OP of this thread has to say. He's not getting much heat
from his heat pump in heating mode. The intermittant CF is another thread.

He hasn't given much in the way of usable information--for instance, we
don't even know for sure if the outside unit is even running at all....
What did the tech do on last service call ???
Then again, air from a heat pump doesn't generally feel particularily warm
in the first place....
===
Hmmmm....looks like I better clean the indoor coils on this Lennox unit
again.....the small line seems to be quite a bit warmer than it should be on
heating--maybe even call in a pro for a full checkup this time....

| First off this all depends on what kind of unit you have also, model numbers
on the; condensor, coil and air handler. I will guess what you have done in
the A/C was addition of more freon, if it was a fly by nighter he probably
forced to much freon in your unit just to keep it from freezing on the
suction side., without calculating subcooling or superheat. If that is the
case then the freon and oil are slugging back to the compressor causing it
to pretty much do nothing, make sure the condensor is running when you have
it cycled to, if not look for a high pressure switched tripped 16 yrs ago
depending on the unit I don't think you will have one, but look anyway.
What kind of thermostat do you have, when was it installed and who did it?
You should be able to turn it on Emer. heat and see if the air quantity is
the same as before, it will be warmer but should have the same amount
blowing out, I am sure 16 yrs ago the air handler didn't have any relays to
go from a med-low to med-hi on first and second stage heating.
Alot of times when I go to houses people add to much freon in the summer and
I have to take the same amount back out. More times then not its the
metering device in the indoor coil, 16 yrs old you are not going to want to
pay the price for a replacment part, and you can't reaplace just the
airhandler the jump in effeciancy will be to high and you will have the
problem, with a mix matched coil and condensor that I was talking about, too
much freon in the winter and too little in the summer.
All depending on what the guy did in the summer but, I would have a tech go
and look at it. Hope this helped you out.

More often than the problem that you are speaking of is an air-side problem.

The above sentence is good, some of the others were almost correct, and
most were just plain disagreeable.

A constructive critic you're not.
Not everyone walks thru life in your shoes.
Suggest you open your mind a little and try seeing another persons viewpoint,
THRU THEIR EYES.

Next time you have this problem go and cut a hole in the R/A plenum then
read the pressures, seal the hole, and then cut a hole in the Supply plenum
read the pressures. I have been around and around with Ruud they all say
the same crap more R/A and that is just not the case. All brands are
different but that is just from my experience

Cutting holes isn't the correct way to diagnose this problem. Airflow
can be measured; if it's low, then that might be one clue that its an
air-side problem. If it isn't low, well then in that case you might want
to check for improper metering. Again this doesn't involve cutting
holes. BTW, airflow can also be too high.
