| Replaced two 15 ton YCD condenser coils with two compressors in each
separate unit. Now I'm fighting with Trane Warranty about the costs.
Anybody have problems with them concerning the time they allow for a
condenser coil change out? Their telling me 4 hours each !!! Heck, it took
an hour to just uncrate the condensers and crane them unto the roof!
Removing the top fan covers takes two guys. Then you must recover the 18
pounds of gas from two compressor systems, remove the coil, lift the new
coil in place, replacement of two driers, remove and replace the two
compressor discharges and two liquid lines per unit, evac below 300
microns, charge the unit, clean the roof off and put back 1 ton of equipment
off the roof back into the truck, Then to do it RIGHT we perform all tests
and take the coils to the scrap yard. Heck, maybe two hours is plenty of
time!!! I guess I should be thankful some idiot who never got dirty in their
life and sits behind a phone knows what it takes to do a repair! I guess I
should be thankful Trane doesn't sue me for ripping them off!!!
Fish, you do a lot of Trane work, maybe you have some info or experience
with Trane warranty about this topic?
Thanks everyone,
Rich

this is Turtle.
In this part of the country of Louisiana Trane has their own service company
that does warranty work or installation and it is owned by Trane theirself. Your
cutting trane out of the warranty work money by doing it yourself and not
letting them do it. Down here if it is warranty work on a trane, they just get
trane to do it and not have a fight. If out of warranty we do it and leave trane
out of it.

| Sounds like Turtle has it figured. Can you go watch the Trane guys, adn see
how long they take?
Second thought -- hook up the recovery pump before you unpack the equipment.

Do good work.
It's longer in the short run
but shorter in the long run.

This is an extended warranty and not a factory warranty. Some chains buy the
extended warranties for the roof top units, it covers labor and material,
but to think a condenser with two 7.5 HP compressors hooked up to it should
take 4 hours is insulting to any tech!!
BTW, stormy, we had the gas pumped out before the crane arrived. Believe me
when I tell you I know how to redeem the time so its not wasted. FYI, you
can't change out a condenser and do it correctly in that amount of time.

Rich, FWIW, I have an account where Carrier agreed to furnish new, factory
coated condenser coils on 28 Carrier pkg gas electrics, ranging in size from 3
tons to 10. Coils only, no labor or additional materials. The 7.5 & 10 tonners
had two compressors and dual ckt condensers. Initially when I put the pencil to
it, I figured we could do one a day. The first one took us 6 hrs, me & a
helper. By the 3rd or 4th one, we were doing 2 a day. Two reclaim machines, 4
reclaim bottles, 2 sets of guages, vac pumps etc. All kept in a roof top gang
box we craned up. All of the units were 5 yrs old.
So I'd say yeah, Tranes replacement time sounds about right, for a unit sitting
on the ground with great access etc. Rooftops or portal to portal, no way in
hell.
For my deal, the client agreed to pay the labor & additional materials: freon,
welding supplies, driers, nitro pressure test, etc. You should have been able
to re-coup those expenses from your customer, as I do not believe they are
covered under an extended warranty, even a factory P&L
What was the issue on the old coils and how old are the units?

Spit coils and they started to leak, but not at the joints. They failed on
the bottom where the alum and the steel bottoms were, possible battery type
conditions?
Thanks, Fish for the reply, both are roof tops. I'm going to fight like mad
with Trane on this and get the guys at the chains office to raise some hell,
they too are under the impression that everything should be covered. Also,
two guys and two a day is 8 hours per machine, ON the ground, they only
wanted to pay 4 hours at first and after arguing they raised it to 6 !!!
People, be careful if your doing extended warranties for Trane on Commercial
equipment, the women who run it think this is a residential AC unit or
something!
Thanks again,
Rich

This is Turtle.
When your warranting equipment for your competitor , don't expect to be paid as
much as you should.
