Hello-

I have a transite flue pipe that is fed by the furnace and water
heater. When I bought the house the previous owner was supposed to
have it lined as an agreement to the sale, but on the day of closing
(and after I'd signed the papers) it turned out he hadn't. I ate the
500$ and did nothing (too young).

5 years later I hear some chirping coming from the flue. Disconnect
the furnace and there's a pair of birds down inside. I get them out
(and 14 skulls). Replace the flue cap with something with smaller
holes and note that the pipe is starting to de-laminate up top.

I'd like to replace/remove the transite piping off of this two story (+
basement) home. The local government has informed me that I can either
contract with an approved removal company (to the tune of over 5K$) or
remove it myself and dispose of 1 segment of pipe per week (odd,
but...).

For various reasons I'd like to investigate the possibility of removing
the pipe myself. From a feasability standpoint I believe it to be
possible to lower the pipe in segments thru the house to the basement;
my concern after that is the installation of a new flue.

With that background, I have the following questions (education welcome
so that I may ask more of the proper questions to the contractors as
well)

1) What difficulties am I likely to encounter in removing a concrete
flue pipe?
2) What are the odds the pipe was sealed internally with cement between
segments?
3) Given that 3 seperate contractors have provided extremely varied
responses in regards to the flue size and cost, are there any rules of
thumb that I can apply towards screening reputable contractors from
ones I ought to avoid?
4) Would a preferred industrial practice be to encapsulate the transite
pipe and line it with doublewall ?

Thanks in advance-

Jason
