Home Centers selling equipment; Diversification

| hey how's it goin'?
so yeah, another topic. I've been reading replys for a couple days.
ill take it like this;
if a topic makes for 150 replys, that's a good thing. because ain't it
true that THAT'S exactly we're here?
around this neck of the woods which is north eastern Illinois things
have changed dramatically.
that change in the business of hvac being home centers, the gigantic
whorehouses that sell heating and cooling machines to homeowners and fly
by nighters.
and the biggest whore; Sears / Carrier have teamed up. now even a day
trader's red headed stepchild can buy a carrier right off the shelf at
sears.
also the gas provider in the region has hired and trained hundreds of
techs to perform hvac service, installs, sales in every aspect of our trade.
one thing i won't do is try to steal outta someone's rice bowl. however
my service business has changed dramatically enough that i was forced to
expand and diversify into other areas of our trade.
that diversification is called abatement. related to the blower door and
whole house leakage.
loyalty, ethics, reputation where are they? fortunately they still
exist, right here in my business. i have a long list of satisfied
customers. and they buy my offerings. either from me, or from my
competition, the home centers.
as far as what my business sells, who doesn't want to sell machines to
whoever will buy them? of course all practicality aside, yes someone
will be exploded by incompetent installations directly related to a
home-moaner doing the wrong thing. apparently the home centers and
natural gas providers have allowed for these problems in their
demographic calculations. luckily i don't need to do that today.
just like i watched my grampa, before he passed give a waitress a
quarter for a tip, if we don't diversify and embrace new technology,
we're sunk. might as well try to get a job flipping burgers. which I'm
unable to do btw.
leak sealer sells. machinery and parts sell. and so does abatement. as
soon as I'm healed from this therapy i'll be adding fireplaces to the
lobby. along with every other piece of equipment the 'big boys' sell.
and they will come.
my new shop, 4k sq ft, will be quite nice for many many local neighbors
to show up and buy stuff from me. and i will sell them whatever they
want to buy. i will not sell my experience. i use that to earn. what
would i be without experience? right, a new guy.
have a swell day

Welcome aboard Russ, hope you beat your illness and get back at it soon. Feel
free to hang around awhile and get to know the group. At times the flaming gets out
of hand but there is a lot of knowledge here. Don't be to quick to judge the posters
here as first impressions can be very wrong. Take some time and observe and then
killfile as you need too. The entertainment value of the group is quite good (as
noted by the frequent requests for new keyboards). Should also mention that the
shared html links here can be very educating and informative. I believe that the
quality of service I perform has been improved by the knowledge, advice and challenge
to be a pro that is expressed regularly on this group.
Topic: We've had a few companies try to go into the warehouses here but it
appears that they have not made much of a dent in the market. Sears is now making a
push at it, but it will probably show the same mediocre results too, as I think the
contractors leave due to poor mgt and profit restrictions (hear-say on my part).

Marc was driving down the street in a panic because he had an important
meeting and couldn't find a parking place. Looking up toward Heaven, he
said:
"Lord, please take pity on me. If you find me a parking place, I swear I
will go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of my life, and give up booze
forever."
Miraculously, a parking place opened up directly in front of him.
Marc looked up again and said "Never mind Lord. I found one."
