Excessive Moisture absortion with POE Oil........

| A very interesting story from a good friend in the trade.
He was called on a three door True using r-134a. The system was never worked
on and he had to add access saddles. The pressures where up and down all
over the place, like the cap tube was becoming restricted by internal ice
and then thawing out and allowing refrigerant flow until the next freeze of
moisture. He proceeded to recover the gas and when he cut the dryer out
about ¼ cup of water spilled on the floor…. He couldn’t believe what he was
seeing.
He then proceeded to look for a leak and found an extremely small hole on
the low side. He fixed it, changed the drier but the official didn’t want to
pay to change the oil in the hermetic compressor. So, he left the pump on
over the weekend and charged it the following Monday morning.
The system was running in a vacuum on and off for about a week, does POE oil
absorb moisture that well? Does POE oil absorb moisture and then displace it
under this saturated oil like refrigeration migration into the oil? Also,
would leaving the pump on for three days remove the water from the POE oil?
I told him from what I learned here and from Jim that he probably still has
water in the system, at least a good portion of it still in the oil.
I know Tom, he is as honest as the day is long and there were three
witnesses to this, including a government official from Columbus, and there
wasn’t any process tubes on the system, so I must believe what he stated as
being accurate and no one could have done this without process tubes.

You cannot get the moisture out of POE oil with a vacuum pump.
POE oil is carboxylic acid and alcohol and has water as a byproduct.
There is an inhibitor added that can absorb only so much water before it
reverts.
The "water" that came out of the filter/drier was probably alcohol.
I suggest you get your local RSES Chapter to have a speaker come in and
address this.

Our local RSES chapter closed down 15 years ago and the closest one is about
60 miles away. Any references that I can use, Bill?

ICOR, National Refrigerants, Sporlan and others all have speaker
programs detailing the issues.
Might be time to start your chapter back up.
I'll have to look through some stuff to see what all I have.
What chapter closed?

Gosh, it was so long ago I can't remember the name of it. I was the
Secretary back in the late 70's. Bay division I think was the name. Then
Black River closed down. Many of the northern RSES became like this group,
people degrading others instead of lifting each other up, insulting them and
calling people names. The only difference between this group and the RSES
chapters was they did this behind the backs of those they talked to, but
this group isn't much different, those who insult others hide behind an ISP.
..... They kept insulting and condeming those who needed extra help. It
became a 'clik', and many good people left so entire chapters closed down.
This is why I hate the fighting going on here, calling people hacks and all,
it will result in nothing but a dead zone, and this group is already showing
these signs with many good people in the past who have left. Mark (Jr.) has
said to me just last week that he's sick of all the crap flying back and
forth and doesn't know if he's going to continue visiting this group, this
is SAD that a few make things impossible for others to learn and become
friends. This attitude destroyed our RSES chapter and others, I saw it first
hand and over time it will happen here.
If you have anything concerning this topic it would be nice to view it. I
will check national refrigerants. The manual that Jim sent me was damaged
beyond reading, so maybe I can get another at United.
Later, Bill

That's too bad. That's not been my experience. Must have been a local
thing. A chapter is only as good as it's leadership.
So what do people do to get and stay up to speed?

Jim did one of the seminars in Atlanta. It was excellent. Covered mostly
fractionation and how glide can eat up superheat.
The CD's I have from other seminars have some oil info. No paper on it.
Definitely some interesting things like, a 500 micron vacuum will not
remove moisture from POE oil. I'll dig through the stuff.

Once again, Turd-le sees any criticism as originating from a single,
united evil source.
Quite delusional.

This is Turtle.
You need to figure out the difference between criticism and constructive
criticism and you may be able to understood as a respectial person. well that is
not true so , Rave on !

Well, looks like we're both finished our work for the day, so let's chat.
You mentioned something about constructive criticism.
Tell me, how is it that everyone who has a problem with you and your
posts is a member of this club you refer to?
Could it be that maybe you should stand back and look at yourself, and
your motives?
I posted the solution to your problem earlier.
You may want to re-read it. It's the long one that delves into your past
history.
Rather than continuously jumping up and down like the hvac court jester,
if you want to gain back some respect, try a new approach.
Read the post again.
Good luck.
Seriously

This is Turtle,
First I have not lost any respect by 90% of the alt.hvac membership but only the
10% suck XXX ability respect of the PBSC club. Your name is listed is in the
PBSC club letters.
if you say I must get any respect from you or your form of respect. Please leave
me out of your hatred game with the use of respect as the point. i know your not
watching here but i don't speak to you unless you speak about or too me. So
remember this when you try to make me look like i have no respect and you are
the inventer of Respect !
