Carlin Oil burner problem
|
|
|
| I have a Carlin 99FRD with a Monarch 0.75 nozzle on a 1986 Burnham V-13A-T
boiler for a FHW heating system in my own house.
In the past year the burner has started burning rough (rumbles). The rough
running starts with a heavy rumble on shut down and progresses to become
rough throughout the burn over a couple of days. I've always had my oil
company come out and check everything. They clean the unit, fire it up, and
it runs clean (no soot dot), 83% eff, and smooth with a good flame- for
about 2 weeks. Then it starts again with the burping shutdown.
I'm pretty handy, so I've started cleaning the unit myself (can't be paying
for a service call every two weeks). What is happening is the flame
retention head is completely caked in carbon. There is a black oily residue
on the nozzle with a discoloration on one side. I blow out the nozzle with
compressed air, scrape and clean the head, and I go another 2 weeks.
Any ideas what causes this behavior?
More info: The service guys say that if the burner were no good we wouldn't
be able to get a good flame to start with. They have tried a few things and
are baffled. I understand that Carlin had sent out a new tech bulletin on
this model that suggested changing the air tube length. They did that. This
one is now set at 2. There was a discussion that the oil line was clogged
with residue or gum so a 10 micron filter was added at the burner end of the
line. Then they thought the oil line was restricted by two filters so they
removed the 40 micron filter from the basket on the tank end of the line. I
took it upon myself to clean out the oil line with compressed air, filling
and backwashing it 3 times. I've got a plastic milk jug 3/4 full of some
pretty nasty looking black shit. But the last batch came out more pink than
black so I think the line is pretty clean. There was a lot of little flakes
and particles that stick to the side of the milk jug and don't wash off when
you swirl the stuff around.
Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like you need a DuctBooster installed in the air tube. If
that doesnt help, then add some milk to your tank. Next you could try
pumping up your oil tank with some of that compressed air you seem to
love so much. It shouldnt take too long and you ought to get your
system completely sooted up. Then lets see how much you like that
compressed air.

Somebody torture you with compressed air as a child?
Ok.

No, you dont need technical advice. What you need is a TECHNICIAN. Not
those idiots you let keep futzing with your oil burner including
yourself.
Call in a qualified company. One that uses a digital combustion
analyzer to diagnose your burner efficiency. You dont have a clue and
if you dont kill yourself you will surely soon soot up you furnace.
Then you will really be having some "fun".
You servicing and cleaning your furnace every two weeks!! Thats about
the funniest god damn thing Ive heard in a long while.
Hey Einstein, if your car kept running bad and fouling the plugs,
would you pull the plugs and clean them every two weeks.
Jesus! Some of you idiots just kill me.

Well, it's like that on *every* news group nowadays. Ever since they let the
www masses in. Especially on an alt forum. You just take your common bridge
troll's like Bubba here as a given. They're kinda fun to have around anyway.
Comic relieve and sometimes you do get some clueless people who most people
would like to laugh at, but we know the resident bridge troll will do
that! And sometimes a little flame war is fun on a day off.
I'll just leave the post up for a while and see if anyone has anything
useful or intelligent to say and then move on.

Hey Bubba. Sorry I didn't get back to you, I just got out of the basement
after cleaning up the head again. Running nice and smooth for now.
Is it really necessary to go over the top with the killing myself hysteria?
With #2 fuel oil? You gotta be dickin me.
Look, I've been a building contractor for 26 years. I'm a pretty good
amateur plumber, a pretty good amateur electrician, and a pretty good
backyard mechanic for a dumb-XXX contractor. And yes, I work on my own cars
too. I guess that makes me a danger to all humanity also.
So don't give me this superiority bullshit, OK? I've been working around
guys like you my whole life and it just gets boring, ya know?
And this is an established company. They have been in the business over 50
years. They service half the homes in this area. No, they don't have a fancy
XXX digital combustion analyzer. They're old school, I'm old school. We get
along just fine. My problem is that the owner of the business is a family
friend. I've been doing business with this company for 26 years. They've
been servicing this burner for 18 years. I know the service manager
personally, he even came out to my house to work on this piece of shit
burner the last time. The last time the technician came out he didn't even
charge me for the call because he feels guilty he can't fix this thing. I
started cleaning it because I feel guilty calling him back out here again.
So it's kind of awkward for me to tell him he's an idiot and I'm going to go
out and hire a real technician? Jeezus, what a piece of work.
Read the post. The unit runs efficiently and clean with a good flame when
it's cleaned. It degrades over time, after the tech leaves.
If you have seen this problem before and know what is causing it then post
back
If not, then leave it for someone who does.

Internet how to do it ?

OK, be nice to your incompetent hack bud and clean your
furnace twice a month, see if anyone here gives a flying fuck.

I read your post, and the answer is plain and obvious to ANY
competent oil tech. And no, I'm not going to give it to you, because
you're an XXXXXXX.

Nope..hes not, but then again, he knows more about your problem than you do.

Big fucking deal. I deal with building contractors EVERY DAY, and most are
totally fucking clueless when it comes to mechanical systems....as they are
supposed to be.
All a building contractor has to do, is point fingers and tell people what
to do....period.

Im ASE certified, big fucking deal.

Well, see...they must be fucking idiots, since they dont have anything to be
able to tell you what the problem is, when its a very simple problem, and
simple to diagnose.
Hell, based upon what you have stated, and knowing what some of us know
about oil units, we COULD tell you whats wrong, but since no one can
properly set the burn...well, oh..thats cause no ones got the right
equipment...why should we?
I work on oil every day...what you describe is a simple fix for someone that
has a clue...
> Read the post. The unit runs efficiently and clean with a good flame when

Read the shit you posted....think about it....
Its OBVIOUSLY NOT a clean flame..
> If you have seen this problem before and know what is causing it then post

> If not, then leave it for someone who does.
Most everyone in here has seen it.
Most all of us have an idea whats wrong with it...
How to fix it? Its simple..but no one in here is going to tell you how to
attempt it since you already said you trust the moronic twits that are
working on it that OBVIOUSLY CANT fix it, and you havent fixed it either.
What really kills me is that you stated that they have been working on it
for 18 years....they OBVIOUSLY know that unit...so why cant they fix it? Its
a simple thing you have there...not rocket science....and golly gee
wiz...you would think that an oil tech could fix something so simple...but
then again, you would think that an oil tech would have a simple combustion
meter too...
God..they are under $1500 for a good one and I have one...its a very simple
thing to use, even you could use it.
So..ask yourself this...
Why cant, a company thats been working on your shit for almost 20 years,
diagnose, and repair, and make the proper adjustment to a unit that they
serviced that long? why?
You wanted free advice...you got it. Now dont XXXXX and whine and cry when
its not what you wanted to hear.
Oh..and call another company out that has the right damn tools for the job.

Get a better set of acquaintances. Try some trained ones WITH tools.

Too old and too stupid to go to school is usually "old school".
What tools do you have specific to this job? Can you even make a list of
the ones you need?
My problem is that the owner of the business is a family

Just keep using him. Even weasels needs to eat.

And deprive you of your "old school" methods? You just keep tinkering
with it. Obviously there is nothing you can learn from anyone who
actually does this for a living.
Those "fancy XXX digital combustion analyzer" don't tell you anything
anyway, right?

Hey, now we're having fun. Someone bring any beer?
OK, so far I've learned:
1. I shouldn't be fucking around with my burner. Granted. I wasn't going to
try a fix the fucking thing myself. I want to know what's going on. I clean
it so it won't soot up the whole unit and waste oil. And it is simple, easy,
and educational. Piss off.
2. The guy that worked on this burner for many years retired about 4 years
ago. The parade of techs that have come through since then have seen it
individually, at most, twice. These new guys could be morons and they are
fucking up the unit. Good point. Got it.
3. The fix is simple, if you know what you are doing and have the right
equipment. So I can stop thinking about having someone replace the entire
burner.
See, that's what usenet is good for. If I'm going to cut a long term
business relationship because this guy can't find good help I need to have
solid reasons. Thanks for the all the hostile input.
I googled some stuff tonight and found some good info. Surprisingly some of
it was Bubba's replies to others in this group. Who knew? The problem could
be with the setting of the ignition points, the infamous post shut down
nozzle drip, incorrect oil pressure, faulty igniter, or simply a bad nozzle.
Now I've got some info to work with when I talk to the next HVAC moron that
comes out.

Again!! Gawd your killin me.

Nope, your right. Fuel oil wont kill you (unless you drown in it). Its
the idiot attached to the oil burning appliance (YOU) that will kill
you. IF you dont believe it, read the papers.

No, just stupid and cheap. If you are such a good contractor, why dont
you make enough money to have stuff done for you?
You think I work on my own trucks? Sorry. Aint goina happen.

Im not "Superiority". Im just good at what I do. Damn good in fact. If
I werent, I wouldnt be doing this.

You stupid shit. That is the tool needed now to service oil equipment.
You dont use the old "eyeball" method on newer equipment.

Fine, then keep doing what you're doing. One day you may find that
they dont have a clue and need to get up with the times. Anymore, you
change with the times or you company fails.

Yes, I do know what your problem is. It is you and it is the company
you have chosen to fix your problem.
NO, I wont tell you how to fix it. It is what I do for a living and
puts food on my table. Plus, it obvious you dont have a clue nor the
right tools to do it.
Either way, I dont really care. It is nice and warm in my home. My
unit is newer and runs very efficiently. I dont clean it every two
weeks either.
Have fun.

So what are you going to do? Are you going to instruct him how to fix your

Are you going to lay into him and read him the riot act?
Are you going to hover over him and watch him like a hawk so that he does it

lmao. i used that surcharge today. homeowner claimed he was a master
electrician. he opened the unit and could not figure out why it
wouldn't start (5 yo carrier hp). When I got there he hovered over my
shoulder the entire time. The 3A fuse was blown because the tx was
shorted because a rat ate through the wires coming from the stat to
the board. charged the genius 20.00 for a fuse, 5.00 to tape up the
wires, 238.00 for the contactor, 118.00 for the tx and 59.00 for the
service call. All the XXXXXXX needed was the fuse. Usually I would
never sell someone something they don't need, but this clown was a
real XXXXXXX. I convinced him he really needed that contactor and tx.
cha-ching, he gets the XXXXXXX "discount"!

I have to agree.
The AS ( XXXXXXX Surcharge ) is for when someone is being an
XXXXXXX, not just for 'hovering'. And it's supposed to be in
proportion to the base bill, and the amount of irritation being billed
for.
But you broke it off in his XXX for no reason ......

T&M. If they cause you wasted time on the job, then is the only time to
bill extra, and it's justifiable. We can't bill for diagnosing
assholitis, we're not certified to treat personality disorders, but we
can bill T&M.
The best response to asinine behavior is to just ignore it. Makes them
realize that they're in the wrong, even if they don't admit it. If you
say one harsh word back to them, then they'll turn the whole argument
around on you in a hurry making you out to be the XXXXXXX with an
attitude. And that is exactly what they're trying to do so they can fuck
you out of your money by leveraging you. Doesn't work worth a damn on me
though, I've learned how to keep my cool, but I can tell you it wasn't
an easy trick to learn. There have been a few who were damn lucky that
have bills.

Hell, I would have traded the needed work and materials for
some labor from a Master electrician. It pays to have friends
in the trades. I certainly would not shafted some guy just because
he was a schmuck! In fact I am getting service calls from Grandkids
of some of my original schmucks. That in essence means that one
Schuck may send you 4 married children which might come out to 16
Grandchildren.. Which means you could lose 21 or more potential
customers just because you had a feather up you XXX. Customers
sign my paycheck! I think that lad should give that Schmuck a
rebate or send a Gift Certificate for him and his spouse to Steak out!

Well this schmuck was so pleased with the service that, a. he said it
was a pleasure to find competent help, and b. I am going to one of his
rental properties on monday to give a replacement bid. This guy is a
slumlord. he had a major leak in the roof just downstream from the
unit. instead of patching the roof correctly, he rolled out two rolls
of rolled roofing and tarred the hell out of it. I asked him if this
was a temporay patch and he says" no, I just want to get this unit
rented". He is charging 1400.00 a month for the place!
The whole time I was troubleshooting the unit, he is offering assinine
suggestions, none of which made any sense. when i would just ignore
him, he was getting all huffy. all of that aside, I have a way with
people, even assholes. That's how I was able to convince him to
replace the tx and contactor and to let me give him a bid on his other
rental. get this, the cheap sob wants to get a system now to avoid the
january deadline of 13 seer, let it sit in the garage until febuary
and them have us come back out and install it. not going to happen but
he doesn't know that yet. I guarndamntee you he will be buying a
system from us and having it installed by us asap or he gets bubkis.

Sorry Al but nothing you've said warrants what you've done. Customers
can get up your XXX for sure and there is ways of dealing with it.
Certainly if they are costing you extra time you can fix the bill to
deal with it but quite honestly, it sounds like you enjoy sticking
the screws to them, shoving it in and breaking it off. Im not trying
to start a flame on you but if you actually did this, keep it to
yourself. You are bragging a bit too much and "we" arent the only ones
that read this. Its stored for years.
And Id love to see your pricing. $200 something for a contactor? I use
flat rate and mine is $113. Oh well, I guess you gotta do what you
gotta do.

$113 for a contactor?? I guess I am not charging enough... I only get $73.
But then my labor rate is *only* $100/hr

Finally, someone calls bullshit, I think. No, I did not really do
this. The call was real but not the fix or the price. There is an
obvious clue in my original post, which everyone seemed to miss. As
far as flat rate, we use it too. A contactor is level 2 which is
238.00. Just curious, what made you say "if you really did this",
because you are correct sir. One ductbooster for you!

I said that because I had a slight doubt that you really did this and
I guess I was right. Usually you would have gotten the "Why you
stinkin dirty *$@&*+ hack! Its too early for all that so you got
the response you got.
I am wondering though what your reason for the post was. I think all
you did was pissed off some more homemoaners and prob got a few more
techs to think you are a crook.
Ok, nevermind, I get it. You are here for entertainment too. :-)
$238 for a contactor! Wow. I love "YOUR" flat rate book.

disapproval here.
Yeah, this kind of shit just perpetuates the crooked HVAC tech stereotypes.
If you can't stand customers, you are in the wrong business.

You can be surprised. We just had a "colleague" set a fire in a customer
home.
I had a customer of mine that ended up with a 50k bill from the city to
clean up all the #2 oil that leaked from his oil filter. Poor guy didn't
want to pay me 72$ plus parts to do his cleaning.

If he's really a family friend, you probably should tell him that his
techs and service managers aren't doing their jobs?
It's like this. If you can't get it right the first time, make sure
there's no third time. If your guys just fiddled with it without the
boilers manuals handy, they're just guessing. You know..The right nozzle
per manufacturer specification, the right pump pressure, the right
nozzle placement in the air tube, etc..

I'm going to take away FisherPrice furnace repair kit.

| What are the following readings?
pump pressure
cut off pressure
pump vacuum
OF draft
breech draft
CO2
smoke
Got any compression fittings in the oil line? Filter canisters tight?
No double gaskets? Anyone put an oil watcher on the line to see if
there's an air leak?
What do you have for filtration? What's the pump filter look like?
