Author York vs. Luxaire vs. Keeprite vs. ??? Furnace

I'm in the process of getting a new furnace installed and so far the
three brands that have been recommended to me have been York, Luxaire,
and Keeprite. I've been told that York and Luxaire are virtually the
same thing since Luxaire is made by York, but Luxaire is supposed to
cost less. If anyone could provide me with some feedback about these
brands that would be great ... are they good, bad, expensive to repair,
etc. Or if there's other brands that you'd recommend let me know too.

Btw, I'm located in Ontario, Canada in case that's relevant. Also I'm
most likely going to go with a standard 80% furnance since the repair
costs for higher efficiency furnances don't seem to make them worth it.

Thanks,
Harry

Maybe if you spent a little more up front for a top quality installation and
top quality equipment, then maintained it, your "repair" costs wouldn't be
so high, and your utility bills would be a lot lower.
OTOH, if you just want "cheap", then you won't get what you don't pay for.

That's why I'm asking these questions ... what do you guys consider top
quality equipement? How would you rate the three brands that I've
mentioned?

Thanks,
Harry

I can't make a recommendation on a furnance, unfortunately, but just a
"hang in there" from an old vet about the mental midgets giving you
shit. That's just the price we pay for defending every XXXXXXX's right
to free speech.

It also explains why most contractors don't bother to follow up on
phone calls; they're too busy being shitheads on alt.hvac. If I ever
find out any of you jackasses work in any of my maint groups, you'll be
cleaning tool cribs until you retire.

I checked out the library, they didn't have much in Consumer Reports
about furnaces. The only thing they had since 2003 is actually a quick
article that's available online for free. Here's the link:

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/...05/overview.htm

Not much information/explanation, but I guess it's better than nothing.

You need more quotes then, since you don't know what the going price
for the usually more expensive brands such as Trane and Lennox will be
in your area. For all the quotes you get, compare what they're going to
do as part of the installation, and the warranty on parts and labor
they offer you. Each brand also has a range of models, with
single-stage or 2 stage heating, and variable or fixed speed blowers as
differentiating features. Compare the size and capacity that you're
offered to what you have now, and your comfort level with that. Some
installers will also offer financing, although I've yet to find one
that ends up better than what you can get with an introductory rate on
a credit card.

Once you have these quotes in front of you and you evaluate the
details, you will be in a better position to answer your questions that
anyone here.

It shows Bryant with less repairs than Carrier....same furnace.
Same thing for Heil and Tempstar.

That's just the normal error rate they get in getting consumer feedback.
You see the same thing in differently badged cars & electronics. It's
still useful info.

Useful if you're knowledgable enough about the various products in order
to combine the info relating to the same products.
It makes me wonder how much research went into the investigative
procedure when they treat 2 furnaces which are the same, as different
products.

Good point. The only difference between Rheem and Ruud is the first letter
of the model number.

It might be due to types of contractors that install the different brands.
The Bryant guy probably couldn't sell Carrier. I hope that made a little
sense. Installation practice will contibute to the repair frequency at
least as much as Brand name. With the exception of the really bottom
dwellers there, most equipment PROPERLY installed will last longer and not
break down as often; than a Top System thrown in by a hack.

Ruud's tech sheets list their model number (the first letter is a 'U') with
all the coils having an 'R' as the first letter (for Rheem).
