Author Alt.Hvac name change?
komobu

2006-01-27, 3:21 am

It seems to me, that alt.hvac should change it's name. There are those
who want a group that is only for members in the HVAC trade. There are
also those who want a group for any and all who have a legitimate HVAC
question. I can see both sides.

The prevailing remark to outsiders is to take it to alt.home.repair. It
would not occur to me to post an HVAC question in Home repair if I am
soliciting responses from people that are in the HVAC trade.
True...HVAC pros also read Alt.HomeRepair. So do some doctors...does
that mean I should ask for medical advice there? When an HVAC system
can easily cost 40% or more of ones yearly salary, I can understand why
they would have a lot of questions.

I understand those that are in the trade want a place where folks with
the same interests as them can hang out and discuss the latest trends
in the trade. They want to read posts that are stimulating and spark
interest in their chosen profession, along with the latest trends in
their trade. They do not want to be bombarded with "Which furnace is
better" ...and "How do I adjust my thermostat".

No matter how much you would like folks to read the FAQ or Charter for
the group....It will never happen!!! Face it....Less than one percent
will actually read a newsgroup faq or charter. Not to mention the point
that there are a lot of bogus ones floating around on the internet.

I think the current name could change to "Alt.Hvac.Industrial" The name
alone would tell any outsider that this group is for those in the
industrial side. Posters to this group would most likely consist of
those that are HVAC employees.

Another group could be set up called Alt.HVAC.Residential. Posters to
this group would most likely be home owners and apartment managers. The
HVAC professionals would then have the choice to assist home owners or
to not be bothered with them.

Is it possible to set up folders in this group for Alt.Hvac.Industrial
and Alt.HVAC.Residential? How much work is involved? How about it
Paul....you are the informal nominated and chosen computer guru of this
group. If this was to be accomplished, I think it would speak volumns
to bringing the group back together again in the spirit of which it was
originally created.

Just my humble thoughts.

No matter what name you come up with those not in the trade will think
they have the right to post questions just because they own a computer
and rules do not apply to them.

One person posting over at sci.engr.heat-vent-ac was talking about how
he was changing gas pressure on his furnace for better efficiency on
his furnace yet had no clue what an electronic co/combustion meter is
and what the safe co limits in the flue are. He believes that as long
as the co is in the flue its no problem and sees no correlation with
high co to poor efficiency.

The only truly moderated hvac discussion board is over at
http://www.firedragonent.com/ You have to register with George and he
scrutinizes those that wish to register. You even smell like a home
owner asking questions and its bye bye. Privileges rescinded.

A new group should be started called alt.hvac.advice, and all the
knowledgeable techs can move there. Then the name of this group can be
changed to alt.hvac.assholes.only

Seeing as this is a public newsgroup, everyone has the right to ask
questions, and others have the right to not answer the question.

It's called 'creating a new group', it's a TON of work, and
I'm not going to do it again.

Hey Bob, you have to understand that guys like him need to be kept
under watch. If you killfile him, then he runs amock and slams
new-comers without anyone to keep him in check. Maybe he can't help
that he's a useless sham-artist with no real life skills, but it

And my server now offers alt.hvac.pro-series.moderated. Zero postings
to date.
A few groups have appeared on my local server's listings simply because
people forwarded or followed-up messages to the at that time nonexistent
groups. After a few rounds of that it seems as though those groups
suddenly appear as valid groups for no other reason. Could be an
illusion on my part, but that would sure explain the hundred thousand or
so bullshit groups that are listed. No comprende.

It depends a great deal on various things - your ISP, who it
peers with, etc. As you say, many groups 'exist', at least on SOME
peers ( not all ), due to the mere fact that someone posted to them,
especially if it was cross-posted with an existing group.

Some misconfigured servers accept this as sufficient to form a
New Group, especially in Alt. But it's not correct, it's not
accepted, and it doesn't propogate.

Most servers, and ALL major peers, do not accept this, due in
large part to the flood attacks of years ago, when the process was
much looser, and vandals would do things like create 100,000 new
groups, or send RMGROUPS for all existing groups, etc.

Take, for instance. alt.tv.the-mole.

I have a couple of different alt.trades groups, but none with hvac
attached. I cannot subscribe to any of them, but I can subscribe to the
alt.hvac.pro-series.moderated group. Maybe he followed through with it.
Maybe he'll tell us.

That group has been "dead" for a long time. The show only had one
season iirc. Now if you look at alt.tv.amazing-race when the show is
on, well that group hops. The first year it was hard to get isp's to
add it. I made it because everyone was posting that amazing race crap
in alt.survivor. After I begged, pleaded, screamed, yelled etc. I made
the group and then flooded the hell out of survivor with the link.
Pretty soon it caught on. Again, making the group is easy, it' getting
it propogated that is the hard part.

Yeh -' work', like I said :-)

And, if you want an actual WORTHWHILE group, like this one
used to be 10 years ago, there's a lot more than that, too. Getting
it propogated is only the first step before you begin building it.

What you have to do to get it going is to cross post into it from another
group, such as this one, to get the posting volume built up. The more posts,
the more news servers will see it and add it to their lists.
All I show here is alt.hvac.

It would also not occur to you to post in home repair if you aren't looking
to repair anything in the first place.

This is something Paul just doesn't quite get. He's kind of a......no...he
IS a moron.

This is an hvac forum and any hvac question is certainly relevant to post
here. Paul is not the boss of you or this forum.

And if you read any posts where he rarely DOES try to answer the question,
you'll find that most of the "home-moaners" he complains about know more
than he does. He's a hack.

BOB , your not speaking in a Professional newsgroup but only a friends
and family members group that was taken over by a few members and now
tring to figure out what to do with it and all the professionals left
to other group because of all the hatred flaming of anybody who does
not agree with the 6 member suck up group.

i have no hatred for the suck up group for i have only sorrow to know
they do not have a life of their own and have to live it out here on
the newsgroup.

Hatred is the only thing that can be seen when a man feels he did not
make it in life.

I will probably not read any replys of this but try to let some of that

This is Turtle.

Komo , Let me get you straight here as to what alt.hvac is now.
alt.hvac is nothing but a bunch of friends and family members of Paul
milligan and all the true professionals have gone their own way because
of the stupidiness that the group is today. So when Paul Milligan
directs you to alt.home.repair to get the advise, he is doing so
because he and what that is left of the alt.hvac can not answer the
question ask and you do need to go to the alt.home.repair to try to get
a answer to any hvac question for all the professional hvac people have
left and went to other places like alt.home.repair and HVAC-TALK.

So don't ask any questions of a hvac nature in a forum of software
salesmen and plumbers. You might go to HVAC-TALK to get some good
answers.

TURTLE

Bob

2006-02-04, 12:21 pm

There are still professionals who come here. alt.hvac is not simply "a bunch
of friends and family members of Paul milligan". It's an unmoderated
newsgroup, so anyone can post here. Scum sucking low life child molesting
scat fans like him and his XXXXXXX buddies can post here also. If anyone is
bothered by a particular person's comments, they can simply put that person
in their blocked sender list and they won't have to read the comments.

The newsgroup for shit eating pedophiles is a few groups down. You
should post your fantasies there.

The sexual fixation on Paul group meets at Denny's.

So far Bob I think you have confused the initials HVAC with something
