Author moving a thermostat
KP

2006-02-03, 8:21 pm

Hi

I have a newbie question for you. I want to move my thermostat from one
interior wall to another. Can I cut the current thermostat wire. Splice in
the new thermostat wire and run the new wire to the new location? If I cut
and splice, can I connect the wires together with wire nuts, or do I need to
do something special?

Thanks

Yes, you can splice the wire. A wire nut would probably work, but it would
be better to solder and insulate carefully. Be sure to keep the color
coding correct.

This is a poor forum in which to get answers. It mainly exists for a few
guys who have evidently pathetic lives to reply with venom to every poster
asking for assistance. (The "Get a life!" epethet must have been invented
with them in mind.)

Make sure you use digital wire nuts and digital wire if you have a digital
thermostat.

Bob

2006-02-03, 10:21 pm

You can use wire nuts, but twist them so the wires turn a little. It's a
good practice to wrap each one with a little electric tape. Never shove the
wire nuts inside a wall. Always leave the connection where they are easily
accessable.

Use the crimp type butt connectors. Rat Shack will have them, and have the
crimping tool. A good auto supply store will have them as well. Be sure t
get the correct sized connector for the wire gauge you are using.

As another poster noted, do whatever you can to keep the color coding of the
individual wires within the cabe intact. If you are dealing with a yellow
wire, connect a yellow wire to it; same with red to red, blue to blue,
etc., etc., etc.

Maybe so--but most those "few guys who have evidently pathetic lives to
reply with venom to every poster asking for assistance" also know full well
that the thermostat was likely placed in it's existing location for a
fucking reason.

So suggest now YOU go ahead and explain to the OP ( and us ) everything you
know about thermostat placement......

Just curious, has anyone mentioned "assholes" lately ???

Yes you do. Make sure when you cut the wires that you cut them all at
once and that only the 24volt power is still on while the 120volt
power is off. This will help the thermostat and remaining low voltage
wiring remember the settings of your thermostat and keep the electron
paths in alignment. Make sure you silver solder the new wire
connections. Next, you have to use di-electric grease on the
connections. Then ad a clamp on split bolt with a scotch lock pad and
good grade of electrical tape. Once you are finished, make sure you
dont bury the connections in the wall. They have to stick out of the
wall and get air. You can cover it up with a custom box but you will
need to add a computer type fan on it to blow air over the
connections. Make sure you change your gas valve anytime you do any
wire splicing.

Assholes like you need to stop expecting that everywhere you
turn, no matter how inapproriate, we'll be standing there just BEGGING

Lawyers don't do it, doctors don't do it, architects don't do

And if you want to get pissy about it, that's fine, but it
