So you want to spend $20K of other people's money to get back $16K of your
money. Sounds like a good deal for you and the lawyer. You need to post a
question on alt.legal.
Maybe NJ small claims is up to $16K. If not, hire a couple of guys to
persuade the deadbeat. Your area is full of them. Some work for larger
organizations, but some do free-lance work. Just go around complaining and
wait for someone to give a name.
If you don't get your money, chalk it up to experience. What's the matter
with posting the company name? Are you afraid they'll come back and say you
did lousy work?

If you were a real contractor you would have been aware of your state's Lien
Laws and used them properly. You are probably not a contractor and are
looking for people to dig you out of the hole you dug yourself. Not from
this Contractor! Get a license and learn your own bussiness.
