Ductwork as Plumbing
|

| I hope the experts here can help a newbie out on this problem.
I'm putting in a bathroom on the second story of my house. To save
time and money of running separate pipes up there, I plan on using the
existing airconditioning duct work to supply the hot water and the cold
air return duct work as a drain.
My questions are:
1) Where can I get an adapter to reduce the rectangular ductwork into a
half inch copper pipe?
2) I tried running water into the ductwork and it leaked everywhere.
Should I use duct tape to seal up all the seams? Is that shiny metal
tape better? Where do you get that stuff?
3) When I tested this concept and ran the hose into the ductwork, the
water flowed out vents in the basement. I want the water to only go up
to the second story bathroom. Do I use dampners to control the flow to
only the one room I want? They don't seem to be that air tight to hold
back the pressure of the water.

Use lots of duct tape on everything. make sure you get a water
booster, a new hydronic thermostat and above all, make double sure
that you run the main return duct through the electrical service
panel.

Charlie,
Please ignore these guys. They are jerking you around. These hacks do not
know what they are talking about.
I have done exactly what you are asking about and have not had any problem.
It isn't rocket science, and you don't need to pay for an expensive
so-called "professional" to do this kind of work.
If anyone tells you that you can't do this, then they are full of shit.
Good luck, and please post your results and any more questions you have. At
least there are still a few qualified techs here ready to help you and who
will give you their best.
Sincerely,

would be better to use the ductwork as a conduit/chase to run pvc through. If
u do get the duct sealed up it probably will not hold normal street pressure
without bursting.

Lowes. Duct tape aisle. Double-wrap, overlap the seams,
you'll be just fine.

Only use "Indy 500" brand ducts. That way, you can certainly use
them as raceways.
