Customer calls. She wants a new high eff furnace. No big deal, right?
She mentions she has a Yukon or something about 20ish yrs old that
also has a built in wood burner. Says she is tired of it and just
wants a high efficiency gas furnace. Down to the basement I go. Sure
enough, thats what she has. Then I glance over and notice a gas
(propane) water heater. It has one 3" elbow on it. NOTHING ELSE! It
goes nowhere. Just vents right into the basement. This is a 20ish yr
old house, poured concrete floor and walls and very good condition.
The owner works in a lawyers office. She has a carbon monoxide
detector (and a husband) but doesnt know how old it is. I checked the
water heater. It is 8 yrs old and no signs of ever ever being
connected to a flue or chimney.
Gotta wonder who was watching over that mess.

She was probably getting enough airflow through the wood-box on the
furnace.
Lucky!

Did you ask if it was a HO install?
