Author Noisy Heat Pump...am I a bad neighbor?
Home Owner

First off, I have search and searched the web for answers! I just
wanted to see if anyone had any opinions of comments on my situation.

My wife and I recently purchased a home and decided it would be best to
have central AC installed (we wound up getting a nice spacepak system,
works great!). We went ahead and purchased a heat pump/ac system
beacuse it wasn't that much more than just and AC unit. About a week
after we had it installed (and after we came back from vacation) our
neighbor approached me and said the head pump was making a lot of
noise, and he and his wife can barely have a conversation in their
living room. I was immediately concerned about this and said I would
see what we can do. After talking with my AC installer, he said I
could put up a fence, but be sure to keep it at at least 2 feet away
from the unit, because it was surrounded by our house on 2 other sides.
Long story short, I put in a lattice fence about a foot and a half
away from the unit, just enough "breathability" for it not to put a
strain on the heat pump, but deflecting some noise from the unity away
from their house and out to the street. They called a few days later
and said "thanks, but can you do something else".

Now, I've attached a link to show a diagram of the layout of the heat
pump relative to our house and their house, etc. But here is why I'm
sort of at my wit's end: We cannot even hear the heat pump in my house!
Sure, we hear it turn on (and off), but when it spins up to full
speed, you cannot hear it at all. The heat pump is located DIRECTLY
below a window in our sunroom, and just 3 feet from a window in our
living room (where we spend a lot of time)...and like I said, we cannot
even hear it then! We've even gone as far as to open our living room
window (maybe they keep windows open in the winter?) and still it is
not even close to being that loud! I want to be a respectful person
but I feel as though no matter what I do they will still complain.

I mean we have a brand new heat pump, it shouldn't be as noisy as an
older unit. It is on blocks with a sound reducing base, and I've put
up the fence to baffle all sides and "reflect" the noise to the
streets. Am I missing something?

I'm not familiar with "SpacePack" but, what are the local codes with regards
to placement. In some cities here, we must be 5 feet from the property
line, AND 20 feet from the nearest neighbors window when the unit is placed
on the side yard.

I live in Maryland, and my installer said that everything was within
state code. I know I'm at least 7 feet from the property line, and my
guess was around 20-30 feet from the nearest window (at least!).

Thanks for the reply!

ps: Spacepak is the same thing as Unico system - a "mini-duct/high
velocity" system. I guess it really doesn't have much to do with the
heat pump noise!

Get yourself a tiny dog, the kind that never stops barking. Keep it
outside. Let your neighbors listen to that for awhile. After awhile,
they will never hear your heat pump again.

You can:
Tell them to shut the hell up and go away IF you are within local code
distance requirements OR
Talk to them and ask them to be a bit more specific as to what type of
noise and maybe even when they are hearing it. If possible, have it
running and then go over and ask them. If it IS and objectionable
noise, get it fixed. IF you dont hear anything worth while and they
are just complainers, tell them to have a nice life and walk away.

Yeah,

Hmmm...I like the dog idea! No, just kidding. But I think I might go
over there when it's on to see how really bad it is. I just can't
imaging it would be so bad? But thanks again for your responses...it's
kind of reassuring me I'm going about it the right way!

Or .....

Crank up the music really really loud - that way they won't
mind the AC so much.

Nice diagram - doesn't help.
Buy them earmuffs.
Buy a new stereo system with super bass twizzlers, sub woofers and play it
LOUD.
Buy them a new stereo system with super bass twizzlers, sub woofers and play it
LOUD.
Put some removable angled ends on your fence and line it with sound absorption
batting and let the mice play.
Put up a 20' earth berm and put an aluminum foil Christmas tree on it.
Cover it with dirt or not.
Get some expanding foam and fill it up.
Move it another side and hope those neighbors are deaf.
Supply them with aluminum foil hats.
Get the installer out and tell him to cure it at any cost!
What kind of neighbors are they? Whiners f'm Nice? Shovel your walk and
driveway? Elderly? Disabled? Veterans?

Buy the guy across the street a new stereo system with super bass

What is the brand, Model #, and Serial #?

Some units have compressor blankets that help quiet them down. They are
cheap and do a great job.

I have one of those neighbors, 1st the fire pit in the back yard caused
their house to smell like smoke (over 100 feet from their house), then my
cat was eating "their" wild birds by their bird feeder, then my boat cover
was making noise in the wind in the winter and she could not sleep, then the
kids played too loud in my back yard while swimming (1 acre lot), then my AC
unit behind the house, 80 feet or more from the closest point of their
house, is too noisy.

He is fine, the wife does all the bitching, two years ago, after trying to
play nice I looked her straight in the eye and told her to get fucked and
call the cops next time she has a XXXXX.

Well, her husband and I still get along great, and so does she and I , she
no longer talks to me at all.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

After that explaination, I feel I was all wrong. It is you. You are a
terrible XXXXXXX and a nasty neighbor. hehehe. Just kidding.
Shoot that nasty XXXXX and get it over with. Your neighbors will thank
you.

Have your installer order a sound Jacket for the compressor. If that doesn't
satisfy neighbor, either move the unit to another location or buy them some
earplugs.

Sometimes the straight forward approach works best, Mike....

A week after we moved in to our house, my wife parked in front of neighbors
house. I was on my way to a service call when wife called me and said 'the
red-neck XXXXX two houses up' was in front of our house screaming about our
car parked in "her" space... (public street). I turned around on two wheels
and came back home. Lady had backed up to the bumper of my car, so I parked
my truck on her front bumper.... Counted to 10.... here she came in full
blown PMS rage.

I asked her "what the problem is?"... she started in about how she shoveled
her space (all snow had melted by now) and how we just moved in a week ago
and act like we own the street, and how we have off street parking and why
the hell didn't we use it, etc. .... like I said, full blown PMS rage.... I
told her it was a public street and with her attitude I would park wherever
the fuck I want, whenever the fuck I want. Also told her that when my POD
was picked up we would be parking in our spaces in back. Until then, "too
bad" and "deal with it".

Then she said, "I'm calling the cops". When I offered her my cell phone....
that really set her off !!

Cop showed up and explained to her it was a public street. He also explained
to her that we were going to be neighbors and might as well figure out how
to get along. Told me to move one of my vehicles off her bumper. I said,
"Of course, just wanted to wait till you got her and cleared this up." I
moved the car back and the truck up. I said to her, "Ma'am" I said, "I want
to offer you my most sincere apology for this misunderstanding, I truly and
sincerely hope you will consider accepting my apology."

I guess that knocked her off balance enough and she didn't recognize the
sarcasm in my voice. She took a minute and then accepted my apology. (Even
though she started shit in the first place.) She apologized to me as well
and went into the whole thing about how she was raising her grandkids, her
parents were dying and her husband is in a wheel chair.

Regardless, we get along fine now... just had to demonstrate who she was
dealing with I guess. Had to show her that I wouldn't put up with red-neck
bullshit, but that I was a civilized individual to deal with.

Wow, too funny. You know, the funny thing is that my wife and I have
guessed that the wife is really pushing the husband to confront us
about this...which is probably true! I might mention to them that they
can purchase a compressor blanket for me if they want to. Do you know
if they are made for coleman/evcon compressors? We have the standard
12 seer unit.

Also, do these compressor blankets hinder performance at all? If it
wraps around the compressor it sounds like it might not be so good for
it. Anyway, thanks for all the funny comments. Oddly enough, my wife
is agreeing with most of the ideas you all are tossing out...dog,
stereo, this sure is going to get expensive!

You could always take up late night woodworking...Saws, planers, joiners,
sanders, and such are not exactly quiet. It would be easy to set up a small
shop, and your wife might end up with some new furnature :-)

Define: Standard 12 SEER unit...lets see...there is the Echelon...comes with
its own blanket..., Yes,...york has them for your unit....since all you have
is a bottom line rebadged York. Might suggest before you do much, loosen the
compressor mounting bolts 1/2 a turn.

This is just but one place to check:
http://www.thomasregister.com/olc/73532418/sound.htm
The sound blankets do NOT hinder performance. All they do is reduce
some noise.

I'd suggest getting a quote from an accredited acoustic engineer to conduct
a 24hr monitored survey.
See the neighbour with the quote and say that you need their cooperation to
allow access and while you're willing to pay for this to be done should the
noise levels prove to be excessive... should this not be the case, you would
expect them to make a substantial contribution, if not all of the costs for
this engagement.
The acoustic engineer should be able to properly advise you on providing an
appropriate noise solution.
By the way my next door neighbour's heat pump used to make a thumping noise
on start-up and we've since fixed this up with a soft starter arrangement.

Tell them if they want to pay to have it relocated to a different side of
the house, you'd be more than happy to oblige.

It probably isn't.,....some people just like to XXXXX about anything.
Its probably barely noticeable, but they are trying their darnest to notice
it.

If they ask again, "can you do something else"....ask them...."like what?".
See what their response is. Otherwise I like my first suggestion...tell
them if they want to pay an HVAC contactor to move it to another side of the
house, its a done deal.

But thanks again for your responses...it's
