Convert Rheem Outdoor AC Unit to Heat Pump?
|
|
| Jim Miller 2006-02-13, 7:21 pm |
| I had a Rheem 3.5 ton split system put in my house about a year ago, I
replaced an old Arcoaire heat pump system. The new Rheem outdoor unit is an
AC-only type, the indoor unit has heat strips, but I think it will handle a
heat pump if I had been smart enough to go that way to begin with. The new
system is a Rheem RAPB-042JAZ outdoor, RheemRBHK24J11 indoor. Works great
in summer. But my Florida Power bills are killing me in winter with the heat
strips. My question: Is it possible to retrofit the AC only outdoor unit
with reversing value etc. to make it operate as a heat pump? Otherwise what
am I looking at cost-wise to lift the existing "almost new" AC unit and
replace it with a true heat pump? If I can recoup my costs, what's the
resale value of my 1-2 year old outdoor AC unit?
Thanks

You went cheap and now its bit you in the XXX. Now you will spend 2 to
3 times what it should have cost you in the beginning to get the
heatpump set up. Your used unit is basically worthless unless you can
find some sucker. Sorry bout cher luck. Suck it up and take your
lumps. Dont be so cheap next time.

With enough money, anything is possible. The change-out to a RPPB-042JAZ
will cost you roughly $4100 plus any applicable taxes. Your milage may vary.
The resale value of the old condenser will be approximately $2 per hundred
at the local scrap yard.

Lets see..Yup. Sure is.
Cheaper to buy the heat pump. Seriously.

Figure $3900 and up....

| Thanks for the answers, all but the first one were useful. The guy that put
the original Rheem in quoted 1800 to 2K to replace outdoor unit with a heat
pump. But then I went with him originally because he didn't BS his
customers. Can't beat that.

| Take yer Prozac, Paul... the guy just asked if it was possible and / or cost
effective.
He admitted his oversight by going AC in the first place.
I've had customers ask me the same questions.
And he didn't say he was going to do the work himself. He has a contractor
on hand, so that should be his first reference point. But he wants our
"humble" opinions anyway.

| Wow, hope everyone had a nice (or enjoyable?) valentines day. Sounds like
some of you need some. Well when you get old and have inhaled enough freon,
I guess it gets to the brain. Are all HVAC "professionals" like this?
Maybe your biz would improve if you had more of a "customer comes firts"
attitude. By the way, I have a graduate degree and 30 years experience in
professional engineering, and probably earn enough in a day to pay for a new
unit. Disposable income, ya know. Play money. But I'm just stubborn
enough to keep seeing if I can find some smart HVAC student at the local
vocational school who wants a little weekend project, and to debunk some of
the BS the so-called "pros" give me. Sounds like it would be fun. Thanks
for the laughs guys.

Bullshit.
OMG...this is hilarious.....if you had fucking "disposable income" your
silly XXX would not have cheaped out and gone with AC only....
I have customers that can barely make it from month to month but they wont
cheap out on a new unit...damn..just when you think you heard it all.
Customers DO come first...and if you had the smarts you think you do, you
would know that a customer, is one thats in front of you with money to
spend...not some wannabe on the net.
Now...pardon me...Im gonna go laugh some more about that earning in a day
comment..LOL...thats rich man...omg..that is so funny..

Graduate degree and a pro engineer and cant even spell "first"
(customer comes firts).
I didn't know units cost less than $100. Hell, you must be rich with
that kind of play money?
By the way, Valentines Day gets capitalized............but you being
an engineer with all that disposable money, you probably knew that?
Dont forget to flush when you finish cleaning those toilets.

Right, you are going to pay some kid to hurt himself, violate laws, can't find
his XXX with either hand - for what? To prove you ARE a cheap bastard. The
only disposable income is your Depends allotment. You denigrate the pros here

I have a couple of things about this reply that bother me..... 1800 - 2K to
replace the a/c for a heat pump?? Thats just for installation, right?? It
better be because I can't get the new heat pump for that...unless he is
getting his equipment out the back door.... It would suck to be you if it
turned out that the unit was stolen. If he is still going to replace the
unit, check the model number to make sure its a RPPB-042JAZ so you will at
least have the same 14SEER efficiency with the new unit that you had on the
old one.
| |
| Jim M. 2006-02-15, 5:21 am |
| Yep that's 1800-2K to lift the old outdoor unit (AC) and drop in a
compatible Rheem heat pump. Tax, tags and labor. Maybe you guys are

Actually, could be done..most likely the housings, etc are identical--find
same model unit inna heat pump version that has a bad compressor and then
swap out fittings, valve, controls, etc.
Cost effective only if someone has lotsa spare time on their hands, posseses
task specific tools, knowledge, and so on....
But to do this in the field...well, sorry..but that's just not gonna happen,
at least not here in the USA....

Probly a good thing that you've learned how to "earn" money so
fast--otherwise, you'd have too little spare time in which to figure out new
ways to screw others outa their own hard earned cash.....
Even Bill Gates admits that much of his success was due to "luck of the

I hope your not in a rush to get the work done, the 14SEER Rheem heat pumps
won't even be shipped from the factory for another couple of weeks. Your
installer is most probably still working from last years price list... won't
he be surprised when he goes to pay for the new one. BTW... has he been to
school yet for the new equipment??

Pay attention guys.........
He said "compatible". Hell, I can make a Junk-a-trol compatible.
This is most likely exactly what he is getting for that price. No
indoor coil or unit, no drier, no disconnect. Hell, the guy is
probably using the old refrigerant over. Some fella's just never
learn. Your just due for another spankin Jimmy boy.

I told you before.. anything is possible if you have enough money......
You cheaped out once, and now its come home to roost.
If you really want to change your a/c over to a heat pump.....
Here's a start...
Completely re-plumb the outside unit and add a reversing valve, an
accumulator, an expansion valve, a high pressure safety cut off switch, a
low pressure safety cut off switch, a suction line filter/drier, a liquid
line filter/drier, heat pump condenser coils, compressor(no its not
generally the same one as for a/c), A demand defrost board with sensor,
hard start kit, and a delay-on-break timer, then completely re-wire the
controls, and run a new 18-6 wire from the heat pump to the air
handler...the 2 conductor wire from the a/c won't work. Keep in mind that
before everything is brazed up, it has to be purged with dry N2, then
evacuated to 400 microns before being charged again. By the time you get
done screwing around with all this stuff, and trying to build a new heat
pump part by part, you could have had a complete new *MATCHING* heat pump
installed by a *competent*, licensed, insured, professionally trained, HVAC
technician, and got the full warranty to boot.
Consider this... in the '70s, they built a new Ford Pinto with new parts off
the shelf from the ground up...That little $3,000 Pinto ended up costing
over $14,000 to build. You can get the conversion done with no warranty, and
at 3 times the cost, or you can get it replaced with the matching 14 SEER
heat pump.
Now..... quit being so damned ignorant and get it done right.

| Dude, anything can be done... question is if it's cost effective or not.
The only thing you end up reusing is the coil, cabinet and fan.
Sum of the parts are greater that the whole. Much greater in this case:
Change the compressor to one rated for heat pump use,
install suction accumulator,
install reversing valve,
install defrost control board and sensors,
install piston or TXV in outdoor unit,
install bi-flow filter drier,
install true suction service port.....
what else am I forgetting guys???
BTW, forget product liability. Now you don't have a Rheem, you have a unit
custom built by Billy Bob.

It may or may not use the same coil, and the new 14SEER Rheems use ECM
motors for the fan.

no warranty on the heat pump, or any of its parts
no efficiency rating
voided warranty on the air handler
no UL listing
no ARI certification
and *probably* void his home-owners insurance too
