I saw, first hand, the damage propane can do to a house.
A homeowner had been boiling tomatoes with a propane tank and a portable
burner to make tomato sauce. After he finished for the day, he put the
tank in his cantina, or fruit cellar.
It wasn't completely shut off. The pilot from the water heater ignited
it. Several people were inside at the time. The residents on the first
floor described flames shooting up from the floor registers. The one
woman received 3rd degree burns and was hospitalized.
It was a two story brick home. The home was lifted off it's foundation
for a split second, then it settled back down. The two walls on either
side of the house literally fell away from the structure, leaving a pile
of bricks on each side of the house. You could look inside the house
from either side, from the first floor right to the roof line, much like
a doll house. The upper floor was rented, and had a kitchen on the
second floor. Water glasses and plates and cutlery were still sitting on
the table.
I've never seen anything quite as surreal before, or since.
