Recommendation on portable digital thermometer please
|
|
|
| Hello,
I'm looking for a reasonably accurate and fast reading portable digital
thermometer to test air temperature specifically in hotel rooms/AC units
because of my wife's medical condition?
I don't need a commercial product, but I suspect I may have to buy one.
Any particular models/brands and stores carry them?
Thanks
M

Digital thermometers are no good. You are getting confused with digital
thermostats, which are good.
Use a thermometer that the bank gives out for opening new accounts. They
are the best ones.

Thanks Jordan, I was looking for something like this. I hadn't
realized there are too many jackasses in this newsgroup. Glad to see
there is someone helpful like you here.
BTW, how does the above measure ambient room temperature? I recall
seeing someone walking around with a hand-held and a probe measuring
room temperature a few years ago at a local government office. The
reading was instantaneous unlike many digital and mercury filled
thermometers. Something like that would be helpful that way we can walk
into different rooms to determine which is the coolest.
Cheers,

Hah! You only think that the reading is accurate and instantaneous. I
guess as long as the display gives you a number you won't question it.
Digital is no good. Go analog except for thermostats. Use the most
expensive digital thermostat you can find.

I thought that it was quite a high price myself. I just bought a
Fluke 62Mini for less than a C-note. It looks just like the mini
Raytek, except for the Fluke coloring. Yep, just looked both up and
the Raytek is even cheaper, damn it. My only consolation is that mine
has a better visibility factor, its yellow.
The OP should go to Radio Shack, they'll sell him an inexpensive one
for $50 or so. More than he has a need for, a digital stick would
suffice.

He could go to any freakin local CVS pharmacy or such, if he
had a brain. Several cheap digital thermometers to choose from.
And maybe some kind of vitamin to restore his brain.

hey Ron, what is the aspect ratio of the one you purchased vs the 12:1
aspect ratio of the one shown in the link Zyp posted. Without
comparable aspect ratio's, pricing is meaningless other than cheap is
cheap.
OP, if you're looking for inexpensive, look for 8:1 aspect ratio.
12:1 is slightly more accurate, but for your particular usage,
probably not worth the extra coins. As for determining room temp,
shoot the ceiling, then the floor, then the walls and you'll have a
pretty good idea what the room temp is. Get good at it and you can
measure r value of enclosed walls.

Aspect ratios are over rated IMO,,,,,, Like power ratings of cheep
home stereo gear.

But then he'll have to carry around a spray can of Barbeque Flat Black
to compensate for the fixed emissivity, which takes away any room rate
discounts. (IIRC, most of the fixed are around 0.9?)

Get a look at this one. We use these, as they're able to determine the
temperature accurately, and from quite a distance.

They start at about $99.00

I think this guy used one of those. http://tinyurl.com/9ye5
Then, of course, if he'd like to actually try working on the AC units, he
can have one of these to start. http://tinyurl.com/fe7az
But, if all he wants to do is to replace the thermostat with an expensive
digital one, he can have this. http://tinyurl.com/8a8b2
What good is measuring the temperature of a hotel room? Walk in, whip out
your instantaneous reading thermometer, and go gripe to the front desk if
it's too hot / cold? Make sure you order room service after that. They'll be
sure to fix you a "special" meal. Most people can walk into a room and
figure out which way to turn the dial. Here's a hint: If it's summertime,
and the room's been empty, the room will be too warm, and you need to turn
the dial to the blue setting. On the other hand, if it's winter time, and
the room's been empty, the room will be cooler than most people like, and
you need to turn the dial to the red setting. Don't forget to get yourself
one of the CSI blacklights because you'll be happy to hear that there's much
bigger threats in a motel / hotel room than what temperature it is. Keep
your shoes on.

The one I bought has a 10:1 aspect ratio. All other parameters are
very close. The more expensive one has better numbers across the
board but not good enough for me to warrant the extra cash layout. I
still use my Cooper SH66 for my SH, SC, and Delta readings.
I also have a Fluke 80TK that I use occasionally. The only problem I
have with the tk is that I have to calibrate it much too often. Ice
water was easy to come by when I was working refrigeration but not so
easy working for the company I'm at now.

Hmmmm...not sure I totally agree with you.
I use a digital for a/c, with a button sensor attached to a velcro
strip. It eliminates ambient temperature and only measures where it
contacts the copper suction line. I calibrate every 6 months by dipping
the probe in a cup of crushed ice and water, which gives you
32 degrees F. It doesn't deviate much between calibrations.
I consider it a must-have tool. I tested it one day against a pocket
thermometer, which I slid under the armaflex. The pocket thermometer
measured 10 degrees higher than the digital button sensor.
Just my 2 cents worth, or 1.65 Canadian.
