Author Oil burner reset button
jhcorey@yahoo.com

The heat keeps going off.

I've had the local oil company people come in many times, and they've
replaced the oil pump and filter and other parts. I've had several
different techies from the company come in, and I've watched and talked
with them as they worked, and they all seem professional.

But the heat keeps going off, and I have to keep restarting it.

After one visit there was a reccomendation to get a new tank. The
owner of the company says that sludge is collecting and this is the
problem.

But last week a technician came it to start the heat (since it had
locked up) and could not see anything wrong. He was there for quite
awhile trying to come up with ideas about my problems.

And then the heat stopped again the next day.

So my question is: If there was sludge in the tank (1) wouldn't it
show up in the filter; and (2) wouldn't it take a while to cause
problems again after servicing.

Right now the heat goes off about once a day, and we hit the button
(just once) to get it going again. Takes 5-10 seconds to fire up.

Since a new tank is going to be about $2000, I'm obviously looking for
any other possible solutions.

Jim

Sounds like a weak thermostat to me. Replace it with a digital one.

Wow! How did I miss this one?
Man O Man. You need a couple things and all will be well.
First, get an @oil tan booster. This will stir up any sludge in the
tank and suspend it. It will all then rise to the top where you can
spoon it off with a ladel.
Next, install that digital programmable thermostat. Get the good one.
Dont spare the change on an inexpensive one. After all, its almost
always the thermostat.

your right, if there were sludge in the tank it should show up in the
filter. If it takes 10 seconds to light, is it smooth? If it's rough
then you have delayed ignition. If it's smooth sounds like it not
getting oil. If you have a opening to look into firebox, and shine a
flashlight and see if you have a oil fog immediately, if you don't
there's several reasons. Leaking oil line getting air, and takes a
while to purge. How is the line ran to the furnace, is tank above or
below?

Thanks to all who responded. I'll definitely look into the digital
thermostat.
I have 4 thermostats in the house. Three of them control zones that
feed hot water pipes and one of these is not working. It's the
upstairs, and it doesn't bother us not having the direct heat there. I
had taken apart a thermostat in the basement about a year ago when I
was doing some paneling, but I don't think I did anything to it and it
works.
The tank is in the basement, 15 ft from the burner, and the line is
cemented into the floor.

Here's notes that have been left on the furnace:
10/05 new pump (I think)
11/9/05 - DC going on safety
New 50200 + EyE Kit
EyE reading now 596
New N and adj Electrods
12/19/05
N,pump, eye 590 , Ignitor OK
1/26/06
D.C N.F.S Adj Electrodes + Air
Eye = 520
2/8/06
Check pump Took running pump ps
Check electrode ignitor.
Found nothing wrong. Fired unit off about 10 times.

I agree, but I still don't want some poor HO getting hurt by not realizing
the tongue and cheek humor in our replies. HO forum or not, we still have an
obligation, as professionals, to caution people against a SERIOUS danger.

The OP should call an OIL HEAT specialist and have his oil tested by the
supplier for water, etc.

He needs to request a technician with lots of experience on OIL HEAT...
usually one of the older guys in the field.

Oil Furnaces are a beast of their own nature and not something to be fooled
with by the inexperienced.

Working on oil is a XXXXX not matter how you cut it... once you are into the
fire side of an oil unit, you can't just take a few steps, you have to go
through practically the whole system from nozzle to tank.

The fact that his "service company" sent out several techs, then the owner
came out after the techs changed a bunch of parts indicates the service
company doesn't know dick about working on OIL HEAT and he needs to call
another company.

That is the direction we have to send the HO's when they come here asking
questions.... it's our broken record in here.... "call another tech who
knows his shit".

Damn "water in the oil" is so common and easy to get in the tank... fill
tube below snow load, filling in the rain, cap left off, vent clogged up or
not high enough... siphon tube too low in the tank..... etc. etc. etc.

HO keeps "pushing the damn button".... then the next tech looses his
hair.... or worse.

..... been there, done that.

No...no...hold on..lets translate this for him...

In other words, he was too cheap to protect him and his family.
He then took it upon himself to MAYBE learn something by taking the unit
apart, and changing every damn setting on it.
Then, (BTW..Home Depot cant sell oil related parts here) he goes to HOME
FUCKING DEPOT cause he could put it on his credit card with the new drapes
his wife wanted, and got a new nozzle...(still curious as to what HD sells
those) and it fired when he put it all back togehter..

Hes got NO idea if the burn is right

Always a good idea with an oil fired furnace. Fucking guess
at it. If you see fire in there most times, you must be doing pretty
good.

No need for any bullshit like setting the gap, the advance,
the mix, the pattern .... as long as you see fire you're good to go.
Don't worry about over-fire, side-fire pattern, underfire, carbon on
the points, after-burn, post nozzle drip, supply pressure, chamber
burn-through, refractory configuration, any of that shit - just 'look
for something burning in there'.

Reminds me of one I saw once - over-firing so bad, it had
eaten through the refractory, the back HX wall, and the outer rear
cabinet up against the building 2 x 4 frame. I mean you could put
your fucking fist through the hole from the burner port and touch
framing 2 x 4's and exterior sheathing on the other side, no shit.

Fucking MIRACLE it never took the building down. And this was
a Pizza Hut, with customers in it. 6 month old unit, by a contractor
who left town in the middle of the night one day ( which is how I got
the account - and all his others, too, all just as bad ). And the
owner was pissed when I red-tagged it. Gonna cut down on his pizza
sales that afternoon.

Or another - a NEW Weil-McClain ( new that day ! ), installed
by MY BOSS !!!!! For an employee of the company ( one of the
installers ).

Guy calls me up early evening - furnace shut off, can't reach
the boss ( our boss ) who installed it that afternoon.

I went over - unit was sooted solid from underneath the
burner, bottom of chamber, packed solid soot through the chamber, and
~ 12 " up the flue. Waffle-style exchanger packed, I mean you
couldn't even see the cast iron from the flue hole. Several hours
with the burner brushes later, with me filling plastic bags bags with
soot and the co-worker who owned the place running them outside, I
finally got to where I could even THINK about firing it up, finally
had draft, clean HX and flue, etc.

Fired it for 3 seconds - MASSIVE over-fire. Insane over-fire.
Nothing but a huge soft fire-ball of yellow flame and visible carbon
in there.

Pulled the manual, checked the specs ( .75 - 1.5 nozzle
options ). Eyeballed the small condo. Eyeballed the wifey in her
short black leather mini. Read the specs some more. Eyeballed the
wifey some more.

Pulled a .75 off the truck, put it in ( my eyeball said it was
plenty and more, than they needed ) intead of the 1.5 that my boss had
put in. Checked out the wifey some more. She definitely supplied any
extra heat required, so a .75 would be plenty, I figured.

Fired it up ( had not TOUCHED mix damper yet ).

Perfect. I mean FUCKING perfect. Never loosened the nut on
the mix damper. Worked perfectly for at least 3 years that I know of,
until I moved away and didn't know the guy any more.

Think about it. I cut the fuel in HALF, and never needed to
TOUCH the air.

Yeh. Just run to HD and pick up a nozzle, that'll work. Uh
huh. For Joe Home-Moaner. Right.

Jeff, youve been away for a while. This is not the same caring group
of professionals it once was. It is a troll haven for frustrated HVAC
techs.

All you have to do is hate anyone who isnt a Republicon, flame every

Dont pay any attention to these assholes. They will feed you false

Try heating help . com. There are places on the web that offer advise

I totally understand. Im not argueing. Just tired of seeing the same
ol thing in here. Homeowner pops in, asks a really dumb question
........or whatever. You tell them that this isnt a homeowner forum and
to try alt.home.repair. Next thing you know, they are spouting off
because we are uncaring and didnt give them the free answer they
thought they came here for. ...............and on and on. Next thing
you know, its an all out war. Sooooooooooooooo, its just easier to
tell them to "Go Away" or "Fuckin Go Away". It tends to "cut to the
chase".
AND...............speaking of oil......................
Burnham oil fired boiler. 450,000 btu. I diagnosed it the early part
of winter. Busted section, water on floor, big mess, etc. I told em to
either get the sections fixed or put a new boiler in. Followed up and
no decision made . I get a call today.
Bubba, can you come look at this same boiler. I turned it on this
winter and its been running ok???. Today when she turned it on (they
like to turn it on and off a lot from the power switch) she said it
shot fire back out the burner. Smoke rolled out, black stuff went
flying and she turned it off and called me. Its in a wharehouse.
Well guess what. I got there, took the inspection plates off and
looked at the diverter. They have cram packed this large oil boiler
from bottom to top with soot. Huge amounts of calcium deposits
dripping down the sides of the boiler from the section
leaks..........just like before.
I told her, my original bid of converting to a high efficiency natural
gas boiler (96%) of $25,000 still stands. HOWEVER, they now have to
get rid of this ridiculous 450,000 btu pile of soot. I aint touchin
it.

Find out how to properly set an oil burner on the web?
Thats easy, but have you got the $1500 for the proper tools to get started?
No...see, I can sit here and tell you HOW to do it, but the question is,
OTHER than have you got the smarts to understand it all, do you have the
proper equipment to do it right?
The answer is obviously, NO.
What did your smoke test show?
Yea..thats what I thought.

I wish it were that easy... LOL. Don't we all want as much money as we can
possibly earn?

I love the customer who complains about being charged standard service rates
for a 15 minute service call.

Customer says, "But all you did was press a button".

It's not the button pressing you are paying for.... it's knowing which
button to press.

I don't need to go into all the expenses involved in being licensed,
insured, tooled up and qualified to press the f..cking button.

BTW, most of my oldest customers happily give me full service rate for
simple calls. Some even put a little extra on the check, offer a glass of
wine or dinner. Hell, I usually spend more time visiting with them after the
service is finished than I did working on whatever the problem was that
brought me there.

..... and that's the rewarding part of my profession.... being appreciated
for one's expertise and effort.... the rest just goes to pay bills.

Jeff
