Author When is a Cold Air Return required
jdhancock@parker.com

This is probably a stupid question.
I live on lake erie in ohio.
Does every room require a cold air return? I have a 2 story colonial
and am looking to remove a cold air return in one bedroom. The other 2
bedrooms both have cold air returns.

Thanks in advance.

Just put him in your killfile.

Now about the cold air return....
Provided that the system was properly designed, and correctly installed, I
would advise against making any changes to the ductwork without doing a
Manual D duct design calculation to see how badly removing that return is
going to screw up the balance of the rest of the system.
Remember that closing off and/or removing any vents or returns in your home
is like trying to partition off part of your refrigerator or oven that your
not using.... it doesn't make a lot of sense. The system is designed to
maintain your comfort level in the whole house....not just part of it.

Okay. Everyone. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION! (especially you, clem)
Clem, you eat most everyday right?
You also most likely use the restroom everyday too, correct?
For the next two weeks you are going to eat 3 well balanced and
portioned meals a day.
Now here is the "Twist".
Just as you wanted to remove a cold air return in the
bedroom,..............I want to superglue your anus shut.
Do you think your system will suffer?
What do you think that poor heating system is going to do?

It does if you do not want positive or negative pressure in the house.

But other than that, for example, if you have a 2nd floor without a return
air, then you'll have problems getting the upstairs cool and dehumidified
without them.

It's in his sig. Ads, quotes, and links in sigs are kosher.

Also, off-topic posts are welcome here, if they're not from
spammers. Newbies here, who are home owners, WILL get attacked.
Is it right? Probably not. Is it rude? Probably. So what?
It's usenet. It's a venting ground, and what a better group is there
in which to vent and blow hot air, than alt.hvac ? So cool it.
<g,d,r>

But a little sarcasm goes a long way, and you must look inside the
man, not at the facade which is his usenet posting style.

"Regulars" in any newsgroup tend to get to know one another.
You'll learn to love some, and hate others, notwithstanding
all of the displayed intolerance, belligerence, and vitriol -
none of which indicate ignorance, BTW.

80 to 90% of it is in fun, anyhow, one way or another.

Most of the "Regs" are here as a pastime, and to occasionally help
someone (or flame someone). Hell, some of us are retired, and have
nothing better to do than to bullshit. :-)

BTW: You misspelled "hypocrite".

Raines,

Here's one for ya....

Yes, you and him can continue to post here--but nobody fucking HAS to
reply.......

===

Latest rundown--wired up that welder tranny 200A x 36v=7.2 kva.....3 Ø

Need to1/2 that because of using one set of input coils as an input and the
other as output windings in a wye configuration........so 3.6 kva then...now
75 % duty rate, so on continual usage, I'll end up with something less...but
for testing purposes...still use the 3.6 figure.

Load is 5.3 @ 460.......= ~2.43kva......voltages off the rotary converter
are 210 / 220/ 240 appx, these ratio out reasonably equal in the stepped up
output.......no frame hum, and no load current is well under 1/2 amp...

Thinking I'm good to go....will watch the core temp rise as I go along...

Probly will eventually mount that particular transformer into a vented
enclosure and use it as a smallish 460 buss in the shop at a later date--a
bit scary to have it sitting open on the concrete floor, even
temporarily...on any continued usage I would will wire up the thermal cutout
so as to break a fault line contactor......

Comments ???

( Yet another nice troll, eh Mike ).......<G>

No, he refrained from answering to you, on his own volition, else perhaps he
never even read the post......

--Pretty much everyone here already know that the cop of electricity is 1.
( Except you, perhaps )......

And if your too fucking stupid to understand and routinely apply within your
thermal calculations the fact that "COP" is simply a multiplier of the
above--it's being used for the purposes of calculating the energy
requirements involved with moving heat from one place to another using
electricity ( rather that producing heat outright ) then you have no fucking
business whatsoever in expecting answers from anyone else here. Let alone

Sure I did...Paul took me to task, so I cooked up a little question for him
and he couldn't answer it.

Let alone

Its an hvac forum...which means any hvac question or post is relevant. What
simple part of that do you not understand?

Missing for me is the part where it appears you imagine it to be logical for
you to expect that when you demand an answer from anyone here, you would
think that individual or someone else from the group should somehow feel
obligated to fucking give it to you.

Then again, I only engage with the insane for entertainment's sake........

Assuming that is true, which I doubt, then you didn't know that and had to
be clued in by Paul?

Sure he did...thats why he replied with profanity and attempts to flame
rather than answering a simple question which, if he truly is one, any
knowledgable hvac tech...and some people who are not...would know.

Dont demand an answer...just a little courtesy...but I guess that escapes
people like you and Paul.
And in case you were referring to my little quiz for Paul...I didn't expect
or demand answer.
His refusal to answer base on his ignorance was sufficient for me.

Nope...but the decent and knowledgable techs in here give people plenty of
help and good conversation.

Why don't you take your troll HO XXX on down the road Raines. You're not
in the trade and you have no business besides stirring shit here.

You or any other homeowner who wants HVAC info can and should get it
where people are to help you get it. alt.home.repair.
That you foist your bullshit here makes you the XXXXXXX. How many times

Annnnt Nope sorry wrong. Were not here for you. Were here for us. So FO.

You want questions answered you take your HO XXX to alt.home.repair
where they handle them there.

How many times do you need to be told Raines? Or are you too stupid to

And you are too stupid to realize that someone posting here with a simple
question more than likely are NOT trying to repair anything themselves. If
they were, then your little "go to alt.home.repair" lame would be relevant.

Most people who post a question are not repairing anything
themselves....just curious as to what it might be before a technician
arrives on site.

And also, just maybe, its because there are so many rip-off techs out there
that they may want to arm themselves against some of your less than
reputable brethren.

Lord knows by the jerk attitudes you, precision and Paul display, you are
among the less than reputable.

Your right..nobody has to. But Paul hasn't proven that he knows jack....oh

Sure, but those who attack are proving themselves to be nothing more than
hacks...and it seems..from what I've read..that the "home owner" that poses
a legit question seems to know more than the so-called techs that do the
attacking.

Maybe thats the problem...they are pissed that a home owner knows just as
much, if not more than they do.

Case in point...Doug Rye could bury people like Paul with hvac
knowledge...but is he a technician? No...he simply knows more about Paul's
alleged profession than Paul does....so do most of the "home moaners" in
here as Paul likes to put it...and I know it just pisses Paul off.

Poor Bill. Not bright enough to know how to create a moderated alt
hierarchy news group, so he can keep people out. Also, of course, too lazy
do the work required of a moderator in a moderated group.

Kind of like his approach to hvac work...too stupid and too lazy to actually
accomplish anything.

Of course, the only ones around here with fetishes are paul anfd his band of
minions....jus read their posts.

paul has issues with his sexual identity. Its okay to came out of the
closet paul, we won't think anything less of pu. Its not possible to think
less of you than we already do.

We don't give a shit. That's what alt.home.repair is for. What you think
we should give people is irrelevant.

It's all a guess until someone actually looks at it. Now that your
stupidity about what we should be doing in our newsgroup has been
answered. You can leave.
