Moving a heat pump
|
|
| rich_rans@yahoo.com 2006-03-13, 5:21 pm |
| I want to relocate a heat pump about 30 ft. The first contractor i
talked to said it was a bad idea as there would not be enough pressure
in the line. The second one said no problem, he would just extend the
line to the new location and add a little more freon.
Any way to find out the right answer?

The first contractor is likely a hack. The second contractor is
correct.

Ahem :-).
Shut up, Travis. Thou knowest not that of which ye speak, in
all kindness.
RR - it CAN be moved. The distance allowed depends on the
unit, and the lineset sizes ( copper pipe diameters ), as specified
for each range of distance and each unit by the manfacturer.
The new total distance from outside unit to inside unit must
be determined, and then the lineset sizes required for that distance
on that unit must be determined. A typical set of numbers you might
see would be '7/8 " SL, 3/8" LL' and so forth.
Typically the manufacturer will specify a default such as this
for 'anything under 25 feet', and have a table of required sizes for
lengths over the baseline. This will vary depending on the size of
the unit ( in Tons of cooling, not physical dimensions ) .
So, you need A ) the total new distance proposed, and B ) the
installation manual for that unit, and C ) a minute to look one up in
the other.
Both contractors should be able to do this for you, for free,
showing you the manufacturers actual literature for the unit, to
backup their position.
One will be able to, one will not.
PS - I was in the business 15 years, and State Licensed /
Board Certified in it. So I ain't guessing on this :-)

abilities.............does he know how to determine the correct amount

| While you do need to add some gas to the system
to compensate line volume you may need also
increase size of suction line depend on your
present distance between condenser (compressor)and
evaporator (cooling coil)
Good luck from Dido

Oftentimes one could concievably go a considerable distance using a "way
oversized diameter" on the extended portion.

Hey Travis,
The original install already has a 150ft lineset attached to it. The
second contractor is going to add another 30 ft of line to it. He
doesnt own a vacuum pump or thermistor gauge. He doesnt use bi-flo
driers or any driers for that matter. He also doesnt own a digital
scale or a decent thermometer. He has heard of the term "blo-and-go"
though.
Now who is the hack?
Bubba

OK, OK, I stand corrected. The first guy is likely a hack, the second
guy is likely to be correct in his advice but may be a hack, too. Heck,
everyone here might be a hack except you and me, Bubba. Hard to tell
nowadays.

No problem.
Just put one of those duct boosters in the liquid line. They can double
as a pressure booster. But don't put it in the suction line. It's always
better to push a liquid than to try to pull it. But then, all of us
professionals know that already.
I just hope I'm the first to post this idea, before Dido..... :-)

I think it's a reach to suggest that some helpful person forged the
headers, so let's accept them as presented.
Good job, Paul--you actually supplied some decent advice to someone--I
don't really care what your motive was.
Keep coming back; you're doing just fine.

He probably would have if it had the factory caster kit installed.
