| Interesting about 7/8 -3/8 not being right for a 5 ton 410 system. What
does Trane A/S recommend? We had a Carrier class a couple of years or so
ago, and as I recall that is exactly what they did recommend. They
specifically said "Absolutely do not use a 1/2 liquid line--never
ever-period" BTW, I agree about the old GE coils. Our service manager
was a tech here for 18 yrs before becoming SM, and he swears he never
saw a single GE aluminum coil leak in those 18 years. Trane A/S has gone
back to an aluminum coil now. I put one in (A coil upflow furnace) with
a 19i cond a few weeks ago. Damn thing was about 30" tall. We had to use
one of the new "Clean effects" (I think that is the name) EACs instead
of a Space Guard to get that beast to fit in the closet. I think all of
the older coils that were short but thick like the old GEs removed more
latent than the new tall thin ones, but I guess this is progress. Now
they are using VS to try to help compensate. Personally I think we would
have been better off if they had mandated 10 SEER minimum 30 years ago.
One person nursing along an old 6 or 7 SEER is going to negate the
energy savings of 20 people going with 13 vs 12. We have already had at
least 2 people in the last month insist on replacing compressors in out
of warranty 10 SEER units, rather than replacing everything. Just my

| standard lineset size for Rheem 5 ton, R-410a heat pumps is 3/8, 1 1/8.

1/2" liquid- yes- only on extended length installs many years ago did
a 10 seer hp condenser 150' out in the farmers apple orchard.
everything inside 2" sched 40 pvc, underground.
Trane has had 1-1/8 standard on all its condensers for as long as i
can remember. (which grows shorter every passing year)
