Author Top Game?
Don

OK, I've been out of the loop for awhile so what is the top game going
around these days?
Can be for either PC, PS2 or XBox.
(preferably PC, but not mandatory)

Dunno. Fry's is either really pushing or really responding to market
pressure with City of Villains. I think Call of Duty 2 was going pretty
strong there for a while. Right now "whatever is most cool for XBox 360" may
be the correct answer. Today's #1 Game (what criteria?) at Gamespot is Grand
Theft Auto: San Andreas (still?). Number 2 is Halo Zero. Halo was real big
back in the day, I can see another Halo being real big.

I'm curious how Madden Football stands up to all of the "hot for that
year" games. Is there any game with the longevity it has? It's been
my personal fav since the college days circa Madden '94. ;-)

I know I'm due for the most recent version (I'm still running 2003 for
PS2).

360?? woohoo, maybe next year, but as far as I can tell they are
untouchable right now, unless you know somebody.
We have the Halo and Grandtheft stuff.
Guess I'm gonna have to go hang at TechTV for awhile and see whats up.

Madden is getting closer and closer to reality each year.
Next thing you know we'll be paying royalties to the players!
I like FPS's and the multi-view driving/flying games.
Got MS Flight Sim recently and found it intensely boring.
Just like the real thing I suppose without the thrill and the view.
You have to plan WAY ahead anytime you even think about touching the stick.

They've made pretty hugh leaps in just the last few years. I'm waiting
for the holidays to settle down and pick up 2006. It's funny, but I
still love that damn game after all these years. They have stuck with
the good ol basics, but improved them where necessary.

I'm with you on the FPS's, those can be fun, especially with a nice
sniper rifle at long range. lol.
I used to like Gran Turismo, but it became such a beating to build up a
good car, that I just didn't have the time for it anymore. The
graphics on that one were always impressive. IMHO.

What fun is flying on the computer if you don't get to shoot at
something. ;-)

I remember way back playing Aces of the Pacific, and starting the
campaign as a Japanese pilot. That was very cool, because you got to
fight in all of the famous battles. I haven't looked that game up in a
while, but I'm sure the graphics have moved lightyears beyond the last
time I played it. Although, even back then the quality of the planes
movement was pretty good, especially when you switched planes. You
could really tell the difference between a zero and a wildcat.

My old standby that stays in the player is Forsaken.
Its a futuristic shooter and you're on a flying motorcycle with loads of
weapons.
Somewhere along the line I learned how to use notepad to edit the main file
so that the enemies have 0 shield.
Then of course you type in the *God* mode, etc. at startup to get full
weaponry.
But I can only get so far before I can't find my way to the next
level........
I have that old Duke Nukem triple disk setup around here somewhere, maybe I
should fire that up for old time sake. LOL

Seems like World of Warcraft already has 5 million customers.

If you want top Graphics, so far nothing beats Half-Life 2 (sometimes I
just want to design game architecture, you should see some of the
buildings in this game), except maybe Doom 3, which as a game just sucks.

I hear F.E.A.R. looks to be a good HL2 challenger though, haven't tried
it myslef, though there is a free demo out there.

Heh...I heard someone say WoW is to MMOs as Pizza Hut is to dining out.
Keep in mind that for you to really see HL2 in all its glory your
gonna need a pretty decent video card. If you play online games, and
since you like FPS, I would recommend Battlefield 2, but I hate EA with
a passion these days, and that game is more of a hog than HL2. Its one
of the few games out there that actually benefits from 2Gigs of ram.

not as much as a few months ago.
(yeah, right)

What's MMO?

I need to upgrade my video card anyway, and I already have 2.5 gigs of RAM.

I know nothing about the top games; most are way too violent for my
taste. I do like flight simulator, and had Flight Simulator 2.0, before
Microsoft, one 3.5" floppy on a 1983 Columbia. Despite the amber
screen, the flying was cool. Then I loaded it onto the workstation at
the office, back in 1989, and the 19" color screen really made it seem
great.

Also chess- Sargon 3, which doesn't exist anymore. I've tried
Chessmaster a few times.

After that not much, but once back in Florida in 98 I picked up Combat
Flight Sim 1 which was fun, especially designing scenarios and filling
it up with all sorts of airplanes. Combat Flight Sim 2 is even better,
with a much better scenario creation module. I made a bombing run in
waves that lasts for 40 minutes, and two other multipart scenarios on
bombing ports with moving ships and such.

MS Flight Simulator is okay; flying through Manhattan, Chicago or the
Grand Canyon isn't bad at all. I got good enough to land a Cessna on
Alcatraz in San Francisco. I haven't tried the helicopter on MS Flight
Sim 2005 yet. Someday I'll get to it. I've always wanted to learn to
fly a helicopter.

Now thats an idea I hadn't thought of, flying low through NYC.
Maybe do some pylon racing around the Washington monument. heh-heh
I might have to load Flt Sim back up.

I've always wanted to learn to
> fly a helicopter.

I had the opportunity to *partner* with a guy a few years ago on a small
chopper kit.
Its not cheap, the kit was about $35k for a 2 passenger version and another
$20k to finish it out properly.
Then there's the whole license thing. You have to be licensed for fixed wing
for 3 years I think (a certain amount of hours flight time) before you can
do the rotary wing deal. I could just see myself getting 1/2 way into it and
running out of funds.

Maybe Santy will bring me a *to scale* version, its more in keeping with the
thickness of my lowly wallet! LOL

I'm champing at the bit waiting for Sniper Elite to come out.

And when it does, I'll probably be in "no modern game machine mode."

Which is a good thing. Means I'll not have to buy it the day it hits the
shelves and I'll be able to pick it up for ten bucks some years later.

I like Tony Hawk 2. They are up to maybe the fifth game in that franchise.

What fun is having a model railroad layout with incredible detail and lovely
tressles if all you are going to do is solve switching problems?

I was in the a store today trying to play CoD2 with the default right handed
controls. That didn't work so good. Aside from that, it was set for only
800x600 and lots of other things turned pretty well down and the frame rate
was right on the border line between "unplayably suck" and "well, you COULD
play it, but why would you?"

I asked the punkasskid "?" and he was all "it's the memory architecture on
the vid card in this machine." Which IS a knowledgable and possibly quite
right answer. But then he kept trying to apologize for and sell to me the
machine. "Yeah, well, CoD2 is a brand new bleeding edge game and..." "Yeah,
and the games I buy for the next threefive years are going to be antiques?"
It would have been fun if I had had ANY suspicion that I was getting
through.

I don't think Combat Flight Sim 1 had those models. If they did I never
noticed. But I did have a hornest nest with all the available WWII
planes in the program, plus others I had downloaded. Great fun, though
a strain on the machine.

10 mph headwind. No strip and no walls. This was with Flight Sim prior
to MS days, and Alcatraz was just a flat patch of ground in the bay.
But the program knew when you skidded into the water.

Ah, OK. I like to pretend that the model of the world in my head has SOME
bearing on what's actually out there. I remember those flat ground days. May

I'm really not a big fan of the sports games either, just Madden in
particular. I think deep down I'm trying to relive my glory days of
playing highschool football.

So how does that explain my enjoyment with FPS? How can you not love
pink mist at 300 yards. LOL

Solitaire, LOL. Well I guess that does count doesn't it? ;-)

The reason I brought up Madden was that it is still a top seller after
all these years, and still appeals to a large market, probably due to
good reinvention every few years. It has a pretty good spread on the
demographics, with younger kids still getting interested in it, when
old folks like myself (relatively speaking in computer gaming terms)
started playing while these youngsters were probably still in diapers.

Resident Evil 4 has a cool POV called *over the shoulder* where you the
shooter, are looking over the right shoulder of the dood on the screen, from
about 6' behind.
Pretty cool.
It lets you see where you're shooting plus whats going on around you. RE4
also takes it beyond the *pink mist* phase and on into the *flying chunks*
phase.
That one's on my list, as well as Burnout Revenge.
Shootin' and Drivin'....yee haaaawwwwwww......

One word.
~ Gun ~
Its a cowboy game, but looks pretty cool.

+++++++++++++++++++++
Gun is a free-roaming action-adventure game that takes you to a world
without laws, where greed, lust and murder are rampant. As Colton White, a
vengeful gunslinger, you must straddle the line between good and evil in a
showdown against corrupt lawmen, a murderous preacher, renegade army
psychopaths, merciless outlaws and relentless warring tribes, while waging
war on horseback, collecting bounties and protecting whores. Travel through
an action-packed landscape of high mountain wilderness, deserts and bustling
territorial towns in an epic story of betrayal, greed and revenge.
+++++++++++++++++++++

Protecting ho's? What the....?

Its so vile, you have to be 18 to access the website. LOL

Heh, burnout 3 is popular at parties (for the guys at least) for the
crash party event. The one who causes the most damage at an
intersection wins! I plan on getting a slimline PS2 to make portability
a little easier.

Resident Evil 4...there's another one I've been hearing a lot of good
about. Someday, maybe, when it hits the 20 dollar mark, or if someone
buys it for me (hint hint).

Have you actually tried it yet Don? I'm curious if its any good, or

great idea for a game. One review I read said there's a lot of space

Never played CoD myself, but I tried the CoD2 demo on the Xbox 360 at
best buy. It was pretty nice, I enjoyed myself, and I was getting sore
from the tension. I really wish these game makers would make everything
destructible soon. Hopefully 64bit computing will allow for stuff like
this.
