Lantern is pretty old fashioned, I agree.
It's use is probably limited to history of architecture.
Having grown up around farms, I think of a cupola as a venting device
on barns.
Here is a definistion from the same dictionary:
Italian, a concave ceiling, of any curve, covering a circular or
polygonal area; also a roof, the exterior of which is of either form
and more usually called a dome.
