Glad you brought that up.
Was just in a brand new restaurant the other night and took the opportunity
to examine the handicap stall in the bathroom. I paid close attention to the
36" grab bars on the rear and right side walls and pondered how exactly
those devices could assist a person in a wheelchair.
I sat down on the shitter, put my hands on both grab bars and tried to
figure out how a person would get from their wheelchair to the shitter and
vice versa.
They don't work at all.
Now lets address your mention above.
What do you mean by *backing all surfaces with 3/4" plywood?
Lets expand.
The wall is 2x4 studs @ 16" o/c with a 1/2" drywall surface.
So where does the 3/4" plywood go?
Over the drywall?
Or between the studs?
If the grab bars aren't used by handicap persons, and they aren't, then
whats the point of the 3/4" backer board?
Take yourself out of your textbook fantasy world and try this:
Sit down in a chair with arms.
Now, without using your legs, try to lift yourself out of that chair and
onto another adjacent chair.
When you have perfected that, go to your local handicapped bathroom and try
the same.
Come back to this group and post your findings. Thanks.
