In a word

Yes.

My package arrived late Friday. These are what nine year old boys think
magnets should behave like*. Great fun. I actually believe the warnings that
you can hurt yourself with them. They didn't send me any large enough to
cause injury, but I can scale up well enough.

I can't verify "Yes, ten times as powerful" but the difference does come
across "order of magnitude like". They go through thick paperbacks. They do
the "look, I stuck a magnet through my finger" trick. I put round ones on
the side of the bath tub to watch them roll about and they roll down a bit
an STOP. No fun ;-).

I'm trying to find a store in the hood to sell me some iron filings.

Sounds cool, gotta get me some.
Thought I saved your last reply on this, but didn't.
Let me know the name of the company again, and the URL. Thanks.

I decided against the wall mounted chisel holder, don't want my expensive
chisels exposed to the humidity in the air. So I bought a small tool box to
keep them in.

Well, for a few bucks you can buy some short pieces of rebar and a file at
Lowes and make your own filings.

I tried Ricos suggestion of tearing into an old 12gb HD I found laying in
the corner but got to a roadblock, until I can locate a size 9 torx point.
My points only go down to 10. Thats the way it always ends up. Everytime I
want to work on something I invariably have to go buy tools that I will
never use again.

Pete, just thought of something.
Stop by any place that does brakes for cars.
They turn rotors and drums so they will have plenty of steel filings, for
free.
Just drag the magnet around the lathe and pick up tons, then drop the whole
mess in a sandwich bag.

Thanks.
OK, I couldn't wait any longer, I manhandled the magnets out of that HD,
broke one in half in the process.
Jeez, those things are something else.
I found myself laughing spontaneously at how they behaved.
Amazingly strong.
Sort of U shaped, about 1.5" long x 1/2" w x 1/8" thick.
When stuck together flat side to flat side they cannot be pulled apart, they
have to be slid apart.
If they were bigger they would definitely be dangerous finger pinchers.

Turn the bag inside out, insert magnet in bag, pick up filings, turn
bag rightside out and zip closed. No mess.

The HD magnets are fun, no?

Yeah they are.
I have 1 laying on my workbench right now with a 2" finish nail (I clipped
the point off) standing on it and another magnet on top of the nail.
Looks like an optical illusion.
