Can you install XP Pro on a machine WITHOUT a web connection?

Wow... that would be tough... You'd need to get SP2 and all the other tweak
installs and updates on disk...

Yes. You'll need to call in to "authorize" it, though...

Its an old P3 and I don't want to do the internet thing with it.
Your right though, I hadn't thoiught about all that upgrade stuff.
I was just wanting to strip the machine down to nuts and bolts, install an
older version of acad and viz and maybe a couple other 3d/graphic programs.
In other words, a bare bones 3d graphic machine with no bells and whistles.
Maybe I'll go back a little further and put 98 on it.

Don:

See if you can find a copy of Win2K. It's a lot more stable than Win98
and it doesn't require all that authorization stuff.

I've never even seen w2k, wouldn't know where to find it.
But I'm familiar with 98 and have the full installation disk right here, as
well as XP Pro.
I'll just ponder this stuff for awhile.
Maybe I'll install a modem and get a trial dialup just so I can register XP.

Everything runs better on W2K than 98... trust me
But, for $5, you can get a network card for the P3 and just use your
existing network...cheaper and better than dial up. Also, you can download
the SP2 service pack and burn it to a CD.

I have a net card in it right now, but I was going to strip everything out
that wasn't necessary.
I just want a barebones system, MB, RAM, HD, CD, Vid, power supply and case.
I'm cheap, don't wanna spend any money at all on this old relic. ;-)

Why can't you use the net card to hook up two of your computers,
register XP, disconnect and remove the net card? Not sure why you'd
need to remove it, but you could.

If the old puter is a relic, does it have enough oomph to run XP?

I've done it. I know I didn't get XP until this apartment. I've never had
net in this apartment. You will at some point need to telephone them, iirc.

Of the upgrade stuff, what's important? There's some mobile networking and
lots of internet security. Is there anything that _matters_ for what Don
might be doing with the machine? I don't know, I don't really pay attention.
If he doesn't have it on the net he won't care about the critical net
security patches.

Because of this
[color=darkred]

Do not do this.
[color=darkred]

That stuff is much more stable on XP. And if it DOES break you don't have to
be rebooting.

XP, Acad 2004 and loads of other apps are on it right now, it has 768mb RAM.
I'm gonna strip it down, take out everything thats not needed and reinstall
the stuff I want.

I've got XP Pro on an old P2-300 (dual) and it's fine. It doesn't really
have enough oomph to run heftier _data_ in PShop or max (only 380 Meg) but
it never did with the newer software. But I didn't notice any issues moving
from 2k to XP.

Hold on there, buckaroo. 3/4 of a gig of RAM and it's a relic? I
don't think so. According to the Official Used Computer Rating Guide
that I'm making up as we speak, that only qualifies as an "experienced"
computer, not a relic.

Yeah that's true but it is worth getting SP2 on it because a lot of SP2 is
non net related stuff like help files, wizards, printing/scanning and other
fixes. But like someone said, he could burn SP2 to disk and run/install it
that way.

iirc, you DID say it was a P3.

Well, compared to the 2.5 gigs I have in my P4.....
I only called it a relic cause its about 6 years old.
It runs strong, will do most stuff efficiently so I see no need to get rid
of it yet.
(5 mins after I hit the Send button the MB will blow) heh-heh

Yes, 800mhz.
All parts generic/clone stuff picked up here and there.
