.....french curves.

Thats right old timers, go grab your box of yellowed and cracked ships
curves out of the attic and lay the appropriate one over top of a storm
tracking map and you will see that Rita will cross the beach about 50 miles
to the west of the Texas/Louisiana border.

While you're in that cobweb infested box latch onto your rusty ol'
proportional dividers and switch gears to the timeline map and you will
discover that Rita will make the above stated rendevous at approx. 11:17pm
on Friday.

Thats about 35 hours from right now.

I remember you discussing your weather tracking device last year. So
what level of accuracy did you get last time?

You need to contact NOAA. They don't need those fancy assed computers
when a cheap piece of plastic will suffice. ;-)

Dr. Don...
Using our latest algorithms on the finest super computers
the program crashed and we resorted to the Wee-Gee board.
It will speed up and hit land sooner than 11:17 pm (10pm)
and 30 miles to the East of your location near Port Arthur.
Katrina privoted right, and we think Rita will too.

There is a reason to this maddness. I spent quite a
few hours studying Rita this AM (near an all nighter).
There is a significant quantity of cloud cover - relative
to the eye - to the NE compared to the SW. That creates
a low pressure and hence suction on the over-all system,
tilting right.

Another problem is the amount of moisture Katrina
left on the ground even in inland areas that can
service a hurricane and being a *positive feedback
system* it follows it's nourishment.

AFAIK a Cat 5 was supposed to be the maximum
physically possible, but Rita is pushing to a
Cat 6, more like a massive tornado.

The spiral pattern of Rita indicates it will
begin to feed from the humidity on the land
Katrina left, that's a jigger.

I mention this because Don didn't predict intensity.

I see every reason to expect a true Cat 4 at the
coastline, and as likely a Cat 5.

To run some numbers (architects will correct please
if wrong), wind pressure is roughly,

90 mph => 10#/sq ft

180 mph => 40#/sq ft

To put that into perspective, a typical 3'x4'
window has 12 sq ft, meaning

Force @ 90 mph = 120#
Force @ 180mph = 480#

480# is like two fat guy's sitting on that
window, so use 1/2" plywood, and exterior braces,
like 2x4's screwed to the exterior, for storm shutters.

Within inches.
(a 27 mile wide eyewall gives the tracker a degree of inaccuracy)

Is that actual inches, or inches on a map? ;-)

Wifey and I recently visited Port Arthur TX and camped
out on Sabine beach. The pseudo road going from Sabine
beach to Texas City was impassable a few years ago.
Going threw Port Arthur was ultra cool. We followed
the road and actually passed under huge refinery
plumbing, totally awesome. Have pics it was that good!

Real inches.
But there were alot of em'. ;-)
Seriously, my house was about 4-5 miles from the center of Charley's eye.
It passed from the southwest to the northeast of my house, straight up
Charlotte Harbor and the Peace River, which separates my city Cape Coral
from Punta Gorda.
