Wide white trim boards--best solution?
|
|
| Sasquatch 2006-10-09, 1:25 pm |
| For our new home, we have wide white trim around all of our windows.
We would like the trim to be maintenance free or near-maintenance free.
What's the best way to accomplish this? Our builder wants to wrap
"one-by" boards in white aluminum, but when I see that I always notice
a little ripple in the aluminum and it looks tacky. Also, our center
second-floor window has a round half-circle window at the top of the
window ensemble, so I don't think aluminum wrapping will work for that
trim. What's the best solution? Would white vinyl AZEK trim boards
work for this? If so, would you bend one long board, or cut the curve
out of a large panel of AZEK vinyl or what?
Here's a link to our front elevation:

It would be nice if we could have a crown moulding at the top of the
windows, too, but that's not absolutely necessary, just a nicety.
Please advise.
Thanks,
John

| Have you considered Hardi for siding and trim?

google Hardi Board Trim...
It's a "wood looking" masonry product. Or more to the point, a composite
product.
It typically requires the same maintenance as stone. (just a little more)
I am no expert on he product, please look it up.
Most nicer subdivision require it if your using siding in this area.
I don't know how much detail you can do. You might also try Fypon. It is
also a composite material, that supposedly won't rot, crack, ect.
I'm not an expert on either, just trying to get you in the right direction.

| Thanks. We're definitely doing vinyl siding, not fiber cement board,
which is what the Hardi product is, I think. I have looked at Fypon.
Thanks! - John

Sasquach,
I don't know where you are, but around here (New England, NJ, and NY) there
is BROSCO and their handy catalogue (www.brosco.com). On page B1 there is
the beginning of their PVC window trim, all kinds to match Andersen windows,
and special orders. I was just specifying from the catalogue when I noticed
your problem. These guys have been around for 116 years and I've used them
for 50. Good people. I'm sure similar outfits abide in other areas of the
country.
